God did not intend for evil to happen. He did give us a free will, and man decided that they wanted to choose to disobey. Man chose evil, and the root of that evil is selfishness. We are lucky in the fact that God gave us a way to escape that evil. He did this by sending his son, who died to pay for the evil that you and I do. "Yet we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Evil is part of the Tao. As there is day and night, white and black, winter and summer, there is good and evil. One cannot exist without the other. All of Nature relies on balance.
