Yeoman 2nd Melissa Rose Barnes

Happy kid as I remember her picking up her sister's and mom's prescritpions. Dropped out of the navy to come home and tend her older sister dying of lupus. Went back to the navy afterward. Tickled to be at the pentagon. Burried at Riverside National on a day when the wind blew over the flowers. Mom Linda a dearer friend now.

David DeRubbio, Firefighter, Engine 226, Brooklyn, NY

I worked with Dave in the early '80s at a small company in Brooklyn. We lived in the same neighborhood, so over the years we'd always run into each other. I last saw him about two months before I moved out here and we promised we'd have a couple of beers before I left.

Of course we never did.

His engine company lost three members. RIP, guys; and thank you.

Spouse went to a wake last night for the husband of a coworker. Didn't know them myself. The widow has 3 kids.

Michael Tanner Cantor Fitzgerald Friend of my closest friend

FS--

Speaking of Cantor-Fitzgerald, I saw an interview (O'Reilly I think) with the widow of one of their employees. She says that the CEO of C-F (the guy who appeared all over TV in the first days because he had luckily not been in the office due to bringing his daughter to school) is not being responsive to the families of his murdered employees.

O'Reilly says he will follow up on this. Do you know anything about it?

Sorry for the loss of your friends.

People get murdered every day. Don't forget about them.

-- (what's so special @ about. 9/11?), October 06, 2001.

Lars, the CEO’s name is Howard Lutkin and he was on Larry Ling Live in tears over the fact that he had lost over 700 employees and had no money to pay benefits to the families. There was ‘something’ about him that just didn’t ring true with me….a little phony maybe. Could be wrong.

-- So (cr@t.es), October 06, 2001.

Yeah, I remember now. When was he on King? The O'Reiily piece was just a couple of days ago. Lutkin declined to participate in that show. According to the young widow who was interviewed, Lutkin did not have a great reputation at the office even before the 11th.

(Crying) I need to try to be successful in business so I can take care of 700 families. I put my home phone number on our web site & I have women calling saying they don't know how they'll pay the mortgage. They don't know what they're going to do. I think the remaining staff is pulling together with the view that we want to make things happen for them. We need to find a way to take care of them. And I think it's going to be a different kind of drive than I've ever had before. It's not about my family. I can kiss my kids tonight. But other people don't get to kiss their kids tonight. And I just have to help them... There's only one reason to be in business, and that's to help 700 families.'

Why should he be responsible for the employees? They should have their own life insurance coverage. That's not his responsibility as a businessman in a capitalist society. You liberals, always looking for handouts, sheesh.

LAI--

Have you ever heard of unpaid salaries? Have you ever heard of pensions? Have you ever heard of returning phone calls? Yeah Lutkin doesn't owe dead CF employees anything that is not covered by contract.

OTOH he owes them everything.

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), October 06, 2001.

Lars,

I think we need to suspend judgement on this for now. The widow may be entitled to lash out in anger; this is a horrendous time for too many, and this tight-knit company was especially hard hit. Though Mr. Lutkin probably didn't get to where he is by being everyone's sweetheart, I understand that he and his sister raised the younger {now deceased} brother after their parents' deaths. Hopefully, Lutkin is able to rise to the humanitarian standards that he has set for himself in this time of extreme duress. Why single him out personally? Afterall, do we absolutely know how much the insurance companies can and will handle?

I don't think I'd take a stroll in his moccasins for all the tea in China.

Note--one hour ago, I did a Google search on "howard lutkin" and got the link shown four posts above this one. Now, if I repeat the same search, there is no hit. Hmmmmmm.

-- Lars (lars@indy.net), October 06, 2001.

Before I get toasted here, let me also add that I am the child of a widow & that sucks no matter how you cut it. Make out your wills & do all that other stuff you oughta do, folks.

-- flora (***@__._), October 06, 2001.

Flora--

I didn't see your post til now. You are probably right. If there is anything here worth pursuing, Io trust O'Reilly to dig it out. The widow (and mother of two young ones) was very compelling. According to her, Lutwin did not return calls and Cantor Fitzgerald made no contact. She was living off friends and family.

Of course, Cantor Fitgerald may be bankrupt.

the CEO’s name is Howard Lutkin and he was on Larry Ling Live in tears over the fact that he had lost over 700 employees and had no money to pay benefits to the families.

There is a difference between insurance and death benifits kicking in (which takes time) and supplying money for food and rent due today.

The N.Y. Fire and police department has a program that writes a check for $10,000.00 as soon as a death occurs which is to help the family survive between the death and the payments of insurance and insurance.

This could be the problem, there is no money to help the survivors get through the first days, and the funeral costs. I don't know if this is the case here, It would be criminal if the policies were in the building along with the victoms, so they would not be accessable. There has to be copies in homes and at the insurance companies somewhere else.
