Same old Geordies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

This may make a nostalgic moment for the older BBSers and made me laugh. In a European special in 4-4-2, they talk about NUFC's 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the 1970 Fairs Cup. "Unfortunately", they write," after defeating the cream of Serie A, Newcastle were dumped out of the next round by the Hungarian side Pecsi Dozsa". LOL. How text book NUFC. Does anyone remember (going to) this match?

Ujpest Doza I thought

I have vague recollections of the Inter Milan game at SJP - in the days when they were real tough nuts and defensive strategy exponents - "cattenacio" or something similar, I believe they called it. Unfortunately, I don't recall much of the game.

Jonno probably would - if he could be encouraged to make a reappearance!

I don't think he likes us anymore, Clarky :( Geordie, I just looked that up and there's some waffle about name changes and what they were technically called. Can't explain, though, as I'm not sure it's right.

We beat Ujpest Dozca in the Final in '69. We played Milan the following season, but I don't recall who knocked us out. However, the name Pecsi Dozsa does ring a bell.

I remember listening to the penalty shoot out on the local radio. The first time in and endless line of penalty shoot-out failures.

The team was Pesci Dozsa, nobody had ever heard of them so it was obvious, in retrospect we should lose to them.

At 10 years old I remember being very confused at us actually losing a European tie, you see it was only the second time it had ever happened. I learned quickly though.

Clarky, at the risk of Gav's wrath, I've sent you an e mail to AL K traz....

Catenaccio: a bolt or padlock - won't let anyone in.

Frequently used on chastity belts in Italy. Not.

I remember the Inter Milan game, they kicked the eff out of Wyn Davies, and had a guy sent off for decking the ref (the goalie if I recall.)

and I always thought Pecsi Dozsa was an abbreviation/bastardisation of Ujpest....

Suppose its going to take an old git like me to admit that I was there and remember it as if it were last season.

1970/71 Season, 21 October 1970, 7.30pm kick off to be exact. Joe Harvey wrote in the programme notes that "This will be no walkover" and he was right. Our home record up until that game in October was only 1 league win and 1 Fairs cup win and it was a good string of AWAY wins that was keeping us high in the league (won 3 and drew 1).

For fans of nostalgia, you can e-mail me at paul.e@blueyonder.co.uk if you want to see a scan of the programme for the game (a nice colourful item for its time).

In fact I will soon be putting the programme up for sale, as well as the FULL SET of our 1969 Fairs Cup winning run. I have now sorted out my programme collection at long last and found that I have lots of duplicates in my collection of 2000!!! If anyone is looking for a particular programme give me a mail and I'll see what I can do for you.

Yes, the might of Pecsi Dozsa, never been heard of since. They reckon their fans still talk of the day they knocked the mighty magpies out of Europe.

P.S. I also have the full collection of S*nde*land programmes for games in Europe. Which isn't very hard considering they only ever played 2 ties, against Vasas Budapest and Sporting Lisbon. I suppose this makes them highly desirable collectors items for the SMB's.

Lastly, whilst I'm bleating on, I suppose I should mention that I also have the 1937 Mackems v Preston programme which I am considering letting go to a loyal and worthy fan. Mind you, it has to be a PRESTON FAN! ;-)

Mungo - I've got most of that Fairs Cup run - let me know when yr selling them, in fact I'll email you, cos i think there's one or two gaps. Let me know about your other duplicates too. the real gem is the away leg of the Ujpest tie, don't imagine you've got that, have you....?
I've just bought 3 progs from the 98/99 season. Not amazing in itself, till I tell you it's the 1898/99 season. Peachy.

Gallowgate end under the scoreboard. Seem to remember some arguement about the gate size. I think official figure was 58,000 but I can recall never seeing SJP as full.

As PiC said there was hell on near the end of the game with I think two players sent off one being there keeper.

I also got my scarf nicked whilst waiting the bus near Hancocks museum!!!

Pecsi Dozsa - were they Hereford in disguise??

Hiro, I think it might have been me who nicked your scarf.

Do you want it back?
