Distance scale with 540ez

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I would like to know why, when I set my 540EZ to a plus setting (example +2) my distance scale decreases (example 2-10 ft. ) It seems like to me if you are adding more light your distance would increase. Seems backwards to me. Ithought by using a plus setting you would be adding more light . If you add more light, you should have more distance. I'm using M mode on the camera with the speedlight set to TTL. EOS 1n with 540EZ. Does the plus mean you are increasing the F stop to a higher number, that's the way it seems. Tom Gibson

When you dial in a plus setting you demand that the light from the flash is stronger when it reaches the subject. The maximum distans that the flash can output this higher amount of light is shorter than the maximum distans for a lower amount of light.

Note that at maximum distance the flash is working at full power and if you demand it to put out more light it will only be able to do so at a shorter distance!
