I loved the book but it was set around Teams/Dunston/Whickham/Blaydon so some of the laughs were very personal. If Don Hucthison could read he'd probably see a lot of himself in it

If you wanted to watch a film of how southerners see us in their stereotypical way (not helped by the Teacher from Gateshead in his book) then see the film. Don't watch it to see any action from the Toon.

stereotypical nonsense. According to the book/film, every 'up North' is poor and thick, their kids don't attend school and no one has a job. Oh yeah throw in a bit of domestic violence and you get the full picture.

oh yeah and the kids in the film do NOT have Geordie accents. More Makems i think.

Thouroughly enjoyed Purely Belter. We bought it on video and gave it to the kids to watch, thinking it would be suitable. It wasn't realy suitable for under 12s as the language is a bit strong , it was embarasing watching it with my 9 year old son. Other than that I thought it was funny as fuck.

I enjoyed it as some light entertainment. Not terribly flattering or realistic to the region, but enjoyable fluff with nice shots of the Angel. And seeing Shearer on the big screen was worth the price of admission for me. ;-)

I liked the book and I liked the film. I have no life.

I liked the film and the book.

If you want reality walk the streets - if you want entertained watch the film.

The book was better though.

ADK

I am in Canberra. I learnt this morning that it was also screening down here. I have read the book and would be keen to see the film

Thanks everyone - guess now I have to decide who's advice I take!!

ADK, I went to the Australian Premier in Perth in Feb, (Festival of Perth). I was then asked and did a review on local radio for the Festival.

It is similar to "Brassed Off" regarding feel and content. Everyone but the locals think it is OK as long as they are not looking for a documentary.

It is being shown on Foxtel I think the end of this month maybee begining of next.

And i just had movies taken off my Foxtel account! I guess I'll have to go to the pictures to see it.

Or get someone with Foxtel to video it for you?

It's an enjoyable film for Mags. It was never going to break box office records (I went to the opening night in London and there was barely 50 people in the theatre...real shame), but it has enough to make it a worthwhile outing. It doesn't overplay the football side, but it is the undercurrent theme that rolls it along. The missus enjoyed it, and she's usually quite critical.
