Today, October 3, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Bl. Columba Marmion (Irish, priest, seminary professor, Benedictine abbot in Belgium, d. 1923 [beatified in 2000])
St. Gerard of Brogne (Belgian, nobleman, Benedictine abbot, d. 959)
St. Hesychius (Palestinian, hermit, c. 380)
St. John of Dukla (Polish, Franciscan priest, d. 1484 [canonized in 1997])
Bl. Mother Theodore Guerin (French, superior of U.S. missionary house of Sisters of Providence, d. 1856 in Indiana [beatified in 1998])

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

Mother Theodore and five other sisters, sent from their French homeland, established the Academy of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on July 4, 1841, at Terre Haute, Indiana. It was the first Catholic women's liberal arts college in the United States.
They also opened eleven other schools in Indiana, founded an orphanage for girls and one for boys, and opened pharmacies where medicines were dispensed free to the poor.
