Rep. Condit Trying to Sell Apartment By Associated Press

October 2, 2001, 2:31 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Gary Condit's Washington apartment is for sale.

The California Democrat and his wife, Carolyn, are asking $130,000 for the one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom top-floor condominium in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. It has high ceilings and a washer and dryer and may be seen by appointment only, according to a computerized real estate listing.

Brian Hong, an agent with Pardoe Real Estate, confirmed that the apartment was for sale, but declined further comment.

Condit has yet to announce whether he will run for re-election. His current term runs through the end of next year.

Telephone calls to aides in Washington and California were not returned Tuesday.

Pictures of Condit entering or leaving the building were staples of news coverage at the height of interest in his relationship with Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old from Modesto, Calif., who disappeared in Washington five months ago.

Police searched the apartment with Condit's consent in July. They have said they do not consider him a suspect in Levy's disappearance. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press

That seems like an awfully low price. I thought real estate in DC was extraordinarly expensive.

It may be a co-op instead of a condo. There are a lot of co-ops in that area. For some reason that I don't understand, co-ops go for a lot less than equivalent condos.

It's only 660 square feet. Good heavens, I think SAR's barn is bigger than that.

CONDIT TAKES DC PAD OFF MARKET

By BRADEN KEIL

October 3, 2001 -- It looked as if Gary Condit was going to run - from Washington.

The beleaguered California Democratic congressman put his one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath D.C. love nest on the market - and then quickly changed his mind, likely after he realized his pad would become another media sensation.

"It wasn't sold, but it's been taken off the market," said Brian Hong, an agent from Pardoe Real Estate's Alexandria, Va. branch office.

Chandra Levy's presumed paramour appeared to be a motivated seller by listing his Adams Morgan condominium for only $130,000, or about $14,000 more than he paid for the place in 1990.

"Perhaps [Condit] didn't want people snooping through his stuff," said one Washington broker.

Or maybe he didn't like his Realtor waltzing the press through his digs.

One Washington Post columnist was given the grand tour under the condition that no pictures be taken or potential buyers interviewed.

The sparsely decorated, 660-square-foot apartment was described as having "a full-size bed with a black-and-white comforter and a dozen unlit candles on the night stand - their wicks singed. No evidence of neckties under the bed."

At the base of the mirrored wardrobe armoire is "an elaborate set of foot massagers."

And in the full bath was "another candle - this one very large and very red."

Last July, police combed the apartment after Levy's disappearance. Police still say they don't consider the California Democrat a suspect.
