Quake [[[???]] Rocks Northern Afghanistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - A moderate earthquake shook a remote region of mountainous northern Afghanistan (news - web sites) on Tuesday, the Pakistan Seismological Center reported. There were no immediate indications of damage or injuries.

The tremor, with a reported magnitude of 5.0, took place at 5:39 a.m. local time, according to the center. It said the quake's epicenter was about 125 miles north of Peshawar in the sparsely populated Hindu Kush mountains of northern Afghanistan.

The quake was also felt in parts of northern Pakistan, the center said. No further information was immediately available.

Moderate quakes and other seismic activity are not uncommon in the region, according to the U.S. National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado.
