Possible Sears Tower Attack Thwarted

FBI Finds Discs, Drawings Of Tower

Posted: 8:16 a.m. EDT October 1, 2001

CHICAGO -- Two men who lived in Canton, Ohio and were arrested in Detroit in connection to the terrorist strike may have been plotting to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago.

According to ABC News, the FBI may have thwarted that attack. It's believed that agents disrupted a terrorist cell that may have been planning to bomb the country's tallest building.

The information comes in reference to five people arrested last week, including Ahmed Hannan, 33, and Karim Koubriti, 23, who called a two-family house in southwest Canton for six months.

Hannan, Koubriti and one more man from Detroit, one from Chicago and another arrested late Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had computer discs and drawings related to the Sears Tower in their possession, ABC reports.

At least four of the five men had gotten their licenses to drive hazardous material trucks. Some of them may have gotten their license at the Hamrick Truck Driving School in Medina, Ohio. FBI agents combed through personnel files, searching for the names of possible suspects believed to have received training at Hamrick last Wednesday.

"The FBI searched for files on five or six students, and we told them that we'd be willing to cooperate in any way we can in this matter," school owner Denver Hamrick said.

The Federal Government now wants to question the detainees about the possible truck bombing attack on Sears Tower.

No charges have been filed against the men in relation to the possible attack.

Officials also are re-evaluating the evacuation plan for the Sears Tower.

The Sears Tower report came among intelligence information that said that more attacks are likely, including on business people overseas.

Meanwhile, Hannan and Koubriti, both from Morocco, were charged with possession of fraudulent documents, involving items like fake IDs and information on airports and a U.S. military base.

Remember this: by now, the terrorists know that we are all on alert. They know that their work will not be nearly as easy as it has been. They will be nervous. They will make mistakes. I hope.

Old Git,

I just hope that the mistakes they hopefully make are in the wilds with no one else around. I would hate to think that one of their oopsies caused another loss of life.

Detroit FBI Denies Sears Tower Plan

Published reports are saying that several Detroit men may have been involved in a plan to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago, but FBI (news - web sites) officials in Detroit are denying the reports.

The report from ABC News said that the FBI may have prevented the attack when they captured the men in a Detroit home shortly after the terrorist attack in New York and Washington, D.C.

FBI agents said that they found a lot of suspicious material, but nothing involving the Sears Tower, when they raided the home.

The five people linked to the home where illegal documents and passports were found have all been arrested. The latest arrest came Friday when mystery man Youseff Hmimssa was captured in Iowa. FBI agents had found a passport with Hmimssa's picture on it during the house raid, and had been searching for him.

Nabil Al-Marabh, 34, believed to be an associate of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), was arrested in Justice, Ill., on Sept. 19. The suspects arrested at the Detroit house on Sept. 17 were: Ahmed Hannan, 33; Karim Koubriti, 23; and Farouk Ali-Haimoud, 21.

At least four of the men had gotten licenses to drive trucks hauling hazardous materials.

So far, only Hannan, Koubriti and Hmimssa have been charged. The charges refer only to falsifying federal documents. The FBI hopes to talk to Hmimssa to learn more information about the documents.
