After Sept. 11, 2001, the only peace we could achieve wouold be a kind of quasi-peace. Real peace is just a cherished memory now.

The problem is that real peace requires all parties to agree to live in peace. The perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks are not offering to negotiate a peace with us, even if we wanted such a negotiation. This make it very different from the Vietnam War. Peace won't be coming anytime soon.

Right now we seem to be in a period of "phony war", similar to 1939-40 in Europe. It is likely to prove to be a false lull before the real hostilities break out.

When you have a President that smirks with glee at the thought of executing U.S. prisoners, you have to expect that he'll exhibit the same crass bloodlust towards our foreign enemies. Also consider Bush's ultra-conservative religious beliefs and it's easy to understand why he's assumed a Christian crusade mentality to rival the evil Muslim jihad.

Don't get me wrong, I think bin Laden needs to be taken out via special ops but to declare a war against the entire terrorist world is overstepping his bounds and biting off more than he can chew. He was selected for the Presidency, not Godhood. I believe he should have addressed his far-reaching global plans through NATO rather than his current scrambling piece-meal approach. Ultimately we're going to have our asses handed to us in numerous tit-for-tat military encounters and I'll be curious to see how many hawks are still gung-ho in ten years' time when this country is in tatters and our population, infrastructure and economy are decimated.
