Struggling at Leicester after O'Neil

Highly rated COACH as opposed to manager

Room at the TOON as Bobby's no2

That is a canny suggestion, I'm quite surprised that I haven't heard it before.

Do you reckon he is "on the shortlist"?

IMHO, the first priority in the backroom is to line up YBR's eventual replacement. Surely if PT came in he'd expect to be #1 when YBR goes. From your suggestion Pete, you wouldn't want him as boss - and I'm not sure whether I would. He did well at Gillingham (?) and as U21 coach. But would he be happy as #2 when YBR goes? If so, then I think he'd could be a good addition. But Carver doesn't seem to be doing too badly right now

We need someone to sort out our bloody defence - someone other than Mark Lawrenson preferably. In that respect Carver has shown no more ability than Wadsworth.

I think if we are looking for a coach to sort out the defence, it has to be a top European coach, someone who has a firm grasp of tactics.

In all seriousness, I'd try to get the Troyes Coach - Alain Perrin?
He has done an magnificent job with that little Club, and could become a future Manager for us.

Good point Clarky, I remember that idea coming up after the Troyes home leg. However, does he speak English? And Troyes were a team full of divers if I remember correctly, do we want our lot to be like that?

-- Anonymous, September 30, 2001

Ah Perrin! He didn't get where he is today by being French. Peut-étre tu es vrais monsieur Clark.

-- Anonymous, September 30, 2001

Paul, with the whether in Troyes, they're not just divers but deep-sea qualified ;-)

But based on seeing both games (as did Clarky), Reggie did his homework and organised his team superbely. Maybe we'll see what he's really capable of in the next couple of weeks.

Err, of course that should have been "weather". Doh! Super tactics from him. Far outplayed YBR :-(

Paul - Troyes were full of Frenchmen, actually - what else do you expect?
As screach suggests, they've probably all got webbed feet as well!

Taylor has now been sacked. Let the specualtion commence....

Perrin. Does he speak English?

I always feel sorry for the likes of Strachan and Taylor, who are good managers who have had to sell their best players and try to use bargain basement buys and youngsters to fill their team. I'm sure Taylor, given a decent transfer kitty could become another Martin O'neil, and I'd be happy with him as number 2 to Robson eventualy becoming his sucsessor.

He's just had his chance to become another martin o'neill and failed....o'neill made his name on a tight budget....

Taylor as our Manager? Not for me. He has failed in Club management several times now, and only really partially succeeded with the U- 21's - a job from which he was also sacked, believed to be unfairly, but for some unknown reason.

His player acquisitions at Leicester have largely been hopeless, and this could be his Achilles heel. I also suspect he isn't hard enough, ie. a soft touch.

He's definitely on my shitlist (sic)

I don't think there's necessarily a connection between being a good coach and being a good manager: Alan Shearer will tell you that Ruud Gullit was a wonderful coach but a crap manager. Taylor did fantastically well for the England U-21s and didn't he get Peterborough promoted or something? Having said that, a defensive coach has to be our priority - a patient soul who can, possibly with the aid of Janet and John books, explain about free headers in the box and the need to talk on the pitch. I'd beg Steve Clark to come back - we were doing much better defensively while he was coach.

We were doing much better defensively when we had Keegan as manager. Fourth best goals against record over our first three seasons if my memory serves me right.

That's first three seasons in the PL
