ISTANBUL, Turkey -- A bomb exploded at a McDonald's fast food restaurant in Istanbul on Friday, injuring one person, a restaurant spokeswoman said.

The bomb was left inside a package on the upper floor of the restaurant in Istanbul's mainly residential Levent district, spokeswoman Ayca Akkaya said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Radical leftist, Kurdish and Islamic groups are active in the city and have carried out bombings in the past.

Police evacuated the restaurant and forensic teams launched an investigation, Akkaya said.

Two week ago, a radical leftist group claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack which killed the bomber, two policemen and an Australian woman. The group said it carried out the attack in support of Marxist militants on hunger strike against Turkey's new high-security prison system. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press
