Quake Shakes Western Australia Town By Associated Press

September 28, 2001, 2:36 AM EDT

PERTH, Australia -- A strong earthquake and 34 aftershocks rattled a village in western Australia on Friday, officials said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The magnitude 5.4 quake's epicenter was close to Burakin, a small wheat farming community about 150 miles northeast of Perth, the capital of Western Australia state, according to the Australian Geological Survey Organization.

The initial quake was felt in Perth.

Burakin is close to the village of Meckering, which was destroyed in 1968 by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. About 20 people were injured, but nobody was killed.

Survey spokesman Gary Lewis said the quake was considered medium sized, and many more aftershocks were expected.

"There have been no reports of damage but people were certainly frightened," Lewis said. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press
