LOS ANGELES -- One of the city's two subway lines was shut down for two hours during the Wednesday evening commute after complaints of noxious fumes at a station.

Several riders at the Red Line station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue complained of dizziness, respiratory distress and watery eyes. Two police officers who responded to the scene also reported symptoms.

The officers and an elderly woman were taken to hospitals but no one was believed to be seriously hurt, said fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Officials found no trace of dangerous chemicals and classified the incident as a one-time release of an unknown substance, Humphrey said.

All 16 of the Red Line stations, which were shut at 5 p.m., were re-opened by about 7 p.m.

The subway line runs from Union Station downtown to the San Fernando Valley, carrying 147,775 passengers on an average weekday. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press
