Copy Personal Documents Make copies of all of your personal identification documents, such as driver's license, passport, insurance or anything you might need in an emergency. Place them in a plastic bag and put in a place you can access quickly; the freezer is ideal. In fact, in a house fire the freezer is the last place to burn.

Alternatively, send them to someone you trust across the country.

Do both! Also, remember to make xerox copies of all your cards, front and back and store those copies in extremely secure places. Having some sort of ID can make the difference whether you're allowed back into your neighborhood if you're suddenly forced to leave. Think about this: you're at work. You're forced to leave so fast that your ID/keys are still inside. How will you cope? Do you have backup keys and ID nearby? What if you're not allowed to go home because the streets are blocked? A little prior planning can make a situation like this much easier.
