The Tick! and other new Fall shows

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

OK, so I'm a little slow. I just found out it's coming to FOX this Fall.

Who else is excited?

Response to The Tick!

Can we talk about other new fall shows in here? Because I saw an ad for that "Inside Schwartz" show, and I think I've seen it before. It was called "Herman's Head," and it was a damn good show.

Shut up.

I think "The Tick" will be hysterical - C, for one, is very excited. The casting couldn't be better. Puddy, y'all. Too perfect.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

I loved Herman's Head! But I was very young.

Yeah, The Tick could not be more perfectly cast.

Anyone have the over-under on when "Pasadena" gets cancelled?

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

I have great hope for the new Jason Alexander show (that I'm blanking on the name of) but I'm sure it'll end up sucking. Ain't that always the way.

I think Inside Schwartz will do well because it's between Friends and Will & Grace, and Travis Birkenstock is a cutie.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

But "Inside Schwartz" is just a half-ass "Herman's Head" ripoff! And "Herman's Head" was a really great show! And yeah, that "Veronica's Closet" show lasted a few seasons because of its Thursday night slot, but that doesn't mean it didn't suuuuuuuuuuuuck. Like, Dan Cortese suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. You're asking for a bad kind of suck, when you get Dan Cortese mixed up in naything.

I am actually excited about "Pasadena," mainly because of the yummy Martin Donovan, who is definitely up there in my Hollywood Top Five. Poor Martin - he starred in "Wonderland, which wasn't all bad, but I fear that "Pasadena" may have the same time-slot woes.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Well, and it's also a huge, bad Sopranos, let's make it kitchy and "funny" rip-off.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

"Pasadena"? I heard it was really dark. I haven't read anything about mob people.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

They're supposed to be a mafia family, I thought.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

I don't think so. "Entertainment Weekly" ddin't say anything about the mob, at least.

(I read it on the plane. I had finished my book. Seriously.)

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

You're right. It's about a "newspaper dynasty." But from all the promos and the "they'll bury you" taglines etc., it looked very familial.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Does anybody watch Curb Your Enthusiasm (speaking of Jason Alexander)? Oh my Lord. Larry David KILLS me, people. I am also loving Band of Brothers right now.

A friend of mine is a staff writer on "Crossing Jordan" so I'm making a point to watch that one in support of her.

And tonight is the season premiere of That '70s Show. In the Eighties! Fez with a mullet singing Everybody Wang Chung Tonight. I'm dying!

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

We're way into Band of Brothers, of course. Just imagining what The Tick will be like is enough to make me laugh.

There's some show on tonight with a bunch of couples on a cruise or something, sort of like Temptation Island I think. You bet your boots I'll be all over that.

I missed that Mind of a Married Man show the other night. Did any of you all catch it?

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

See I thought Inside Swartz looked like a cute idea that would get old really quickly. How many times can you laugh at a sports announcer describing this guy's sex life? With Herman's Head each inside-the-head character had their own little personality and they were on it every week. IS seems to have a revolving-door of sports people. Blah.

My issue with the Tick is that because Comedy Central had some rights associated with the cartoon they changed a bunch of the characters. Der Fladermaus is no more; Sewer Urchin is no more. Wah. Casting Puddy is genius though.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Vincent D'Onfrio. Mmmm, yeah, baby!

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Yeah, and the American Maid character isn't American Maid. She's Captain Something-Less-Funny-I-Don't-Remember.

It'll still kick ass.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Robyn -- Ron Livingston. Love him! Is there a BoB thread I'm missing?

I watched Mind of a Married Man, and I hated it. If you enjoy watching a hen-pecked wimp fantasize about young girls and endure verbal and emotional abuse from his snotty bitchface British wife, this show is for you! Oh, and also, he has a womanizing cad friend who is "happily" married yet fucks everything that moves. Nice.

Ooooo yes, Vinnie D, I'll have to try and catch that!

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Robyn - Love Cruise: The Maiden Voyage.

It was originally supposed to air on the 11th.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Okay, now, y'all, I can't be the only one who's waiting for Survivor III now, can I?

Uh, okay, maybe I can. Shaddup.

I'm watching Band of Brothers, too, if that helps redeem me in any way.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

I am, although not as much as I would have been if Colby hadn't given away the prize in "Survivor II."

That's my one vice. I boycotted the first year of Survivor, but this year it became an addiction.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Ah, Survivor III. Anyone know when this airs?

I'm also not ashamed to admit I'm looking forward to the premiere of Boston Public, although it's not a new show. (On the FOX note, someone, anybody, please, put Ally McBeal out of its misery!)

To answer my own question: October 11.

Okay, someone please tell me you watched Love Cruise. How trashy are those people? How much do I love this show?

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

I missed it! Damn. I was taping the Frasier premiere for Master V.

But the "That 70s Show" premiere was great, I thought.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

Um, yeah. I got sucked into the Love Cruize vortex.

Lordy, those people are nuts. And I totally picked the people who got voted off. Now that Bob guy is stuck in Aruba with Gina. Heh. Of course, he's something of a peckerhead, so maybe she's the one with the bad luck.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2001

That 70s show was really good. I'm kinda happy it's lasted as long as it has.

Frasier was great. As usual.

The Emeril sitcom premier was last night. It can be summed up as follows - Great chef, baaaaaaaad actor.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Oh, I missed Emeril! Now I'm kind of glad I did.

What premieres tonight?

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Oh Hannah, I too watched Fuck Boat. Somebody make a thread, I am SO ready to dish on the ultimate skankiness of this show and its whorible denizens.

That 70s Show -- "Breaking News: I'm toasted." BWAHAHA! And as I predicted, Fez was cracking my ass up with each musical interlude.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Love Cruise! Oh, I had no doubt that it would thrill me. You all should have seen me every Wednesday during the weeks of Temptation Island. Love Cruise was made for me. So much cheesy, phony, ugly behavior? Hooked. And then the Real World came on right after, so my butt was pretty much permanently on the sofa all night long.

Gina was pretty bitchy, but she had really cute hair. The same cannot be said for Boobi. Did you all see the previews for next week? I think her eyes actually jump right out of her head. Crazy.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Did anyone watch Ellen's new show?

I also watched part of Philly. It was actually really good.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

I think Law and Order premieres tonight. Also another new 70's Show and the best comedy you aren't watching, Grounded for Life. I love that show. Especially the youngest kid, he kills me.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Shae, I've been watching Grounded For Life. (And, apparently, way too much TV in general.) And since Danny Masterson is on the season premiere, I WILL be watching it, most definitely.

That youngest kid IS a panic, I loved the one where they were selling candy for school and the two kids were explaining to dad: "We're not supposed to sell it door-to-door, on the street, or outside of stores." And the youngest kid goes, "Or anywhere there are actual PEOPLE." BWAHAHAHA!

Did anybody watch Undeclared last night?

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Aiden, the best youngest kid moment is when he was scroungin donuts out of dumpsters and then dancing outside a Chinese restaurant for food and they took away his dumplings. Ha! Oh, or when he fell asleep at the hospital and when he was woken up he said, "I'm sorry I'm naked in church, God." Hee.

We missed Undeclared because I can't commit to another Tuesday show. As it is we are going to TiVO Buffy and watch Gilmore Girls and I'm trying to keep the TiVO A, VCR B, watch C down to just Sundays when L&O:CI, Practice and X-Files are all on. No more That 70's Shows until summer re-runs for me.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

We watched Undeclared.

I was disappointed, because although I expected not much, NYT evidently said really good things about it. I was hoping that it would be more real, less stereotype. Maybe I'm just out of touch with the college freshman scene.

I'll give it a couple more chances.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

I couldn't watch Undeclared. It annoyed me.

I also LOVE Grounded For Life.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Oh, I liked Undeclared! And if any of y'all ever wanted to know what little Joey Chao looks like, look at the little guy who seemed to be the main character. Jay was his character's name, I think.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Correction: Jay is the actor's name--his character's name is Steven.

Please carry on.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

I thought Undeclared was okay. I liked the Dad and the Barenaked Lady roommate bonding over a keg (although it's not very realistic). And the brunette girl having that fight with her boyfriend on the phone -- oh Lord my mind reeled and I looked over at my husband and said, "Um, I think I just suffered a flashback to us, circa 1993?" But the "debonair" British roommate was lame and every last one of those boys looks like a damn homeless man. What do the casting directors have against pretty, I ask you???

Oh, poor Emeril. The few minutes I caught, flipping back and forth, were PAINFULLY bad.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

That 70's Show. Classic. I love that show, I swear. I'll be watching it again tonight, of course.

Undeclared: I wanted to like it, but it gave me the heeby jeebies, with that kid's dad hanging out at the dorm party, then spending the night. Ew.

Fuck Boat: This thing is just insanely funny. My comments are over at the Love Cruise thread. Howling, here.

I'm torn, tonight, about how to plan my evening, because I missed Band of Brothers on Sunday, so I need to catch it tonight on HBO, but I don't want to miss 70's, GFL, or Love Cruise.

Dammit. I need a TiVo, apparently, since of COURSE I don't know how to program my damn VCR.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Fox has suddenly become my favorite network.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

H, Fox gave me Temptation Island. I'll always love them for that.

Oooh, they also brought back our afternoon Simpson's fix. Sweet, blessed Fox.

Am I the only person who thinks That 70s Show was a good idea that went wrong? It was funny the first few shows, but now I think they have hack writers. I want to love them, but they don't make me laugh.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Sometimes that show makes me laugh out loud, but last night was simply Eh. I think because I'd seen all the really funny parts in the million promos for it.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001

Inside Schwartz wasn't bad, but I imagine all those "imaginary" scenes will wear after awhile. I hope they start using them sparingly.

Adam and Eve. How (not) funny. And the actress who plays Eve was Cher on t.v.'s Clueless, right? She's so familiar, but I can't place her.

His dad though is Jack's wacky womanizing friend from Three's Company! I'm glad he's found work.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001

C ended up loving that show. I was shocked. The Adam & Eve thing was just not funny, at all. And the whole gal pal, "no one's good enough for you" thing is just so tired.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001

So I guess Danny's Show (or something) is this season's first casualty. I assume you're all with me asking - "Jigga What?" Because who knew Daniel Stern had a show??

Also, I just want to express my hatred for the wonky UPN/WB sharing that occurs in Columbus and how I have TWO UPN chanels, but no Primetime WB which means no Gilmore Girls. Wah!

-- Anonymous, October 10, 2001

Who watched it? I only saw the first half. It made me laugh out loud several times.

-- Anonymous, November 09, 2001

Well, I hope future Tick episodes are more like the first ep, not the second.

There was no villain! How do you go an entire episode without a villain? And while I can process that Captain Liberty is no American Maid, so far she's been completely incompetent and sex-crazed. I like Batmanuel (and the nice touch of having his cell phone play a different tune every ep). And Arthur has come a long way. But please, have Captain Liberty kick ass, rather than get it, in the next ep.

Patrick Warburton is brilliant, but The Tick was being just plain mean to Arthur on occasion, as opposed to cluelessly insensitive.

-- Anonymous, November 16, 2001

Huh. I really didn't care for the first episode until the last 10 minutes but I loved last night! Although I still think they are doing the "Arthur as The Everyman Trying to Be a Hero" show instead of Tick.

They made a chismbop joke, nothing is funnier than a chismbop joke.

Given that it's live action I have a feeling there won't be a villian every episode, probably too costly for a half hour comedy.

Though I agree with your assesment on Captain Liberty. Also, that name irritates me. MISS Liberty people, geezus, it's not hard. Lady Freedom. Anything but Captain Liberty.
