WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A strong earthquake rocked buildings and rattled windows across central New Zealand on Monday, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

The 5.6 magnitude quake, which struck at 4:49 p.m., was centered near the farming settlement of Porangahau on North Island and was felt 150 miles to the south in the capital, Wellington.

The institute said the quake's epicenter was 17 miles below the surface of the earth.

New Zealand experiences up to a dozen earthquakes of similar magnitude or larger each year.

An earthquake of 5.6 magnitude can cause significant damage and injury if centered in a metropolitan area. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press

Maybe she was cursing the cosmetic surgeon who did her facelift, eye job, etc., before she ran for office. Maybe that's why she looks so pickle-faced when she tries to look solemn and interested.
