Quote of the Day, Part VIII

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

There is a light in this world,

a healing spirit more powerful

than any darkness we may encounter.

We sometimes lose sight of this force

when there is suffering, too much pain.

Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge

through the lives of ordinary people

who hear a call and answer

in extraordinary ways.

“There’s no distinction now between combatants and non-combatants,” said Chuck Spinney, a Pentagon air warfare analyst and an expert on modern war. “He’s [bin Laden] bypassing our big military and will try to conquer our will to resist.

“His aims are relatively clear. He wants us out of Saudi Arabia and wants Israel to disappear. He wants us to become so terrorized we’ll go neutral.”

Servants of Peace Suppose there were a place we could go to learn the art of peace, a sort of boot camp for spiritual warriors. Instead of spending hours disciplining ourselves to defeat the enemy, we could spend hours and hours dissolving the causes of war. Such a place might be called bodhisattva training -- or training for servants of peace. The word bodhisattva refers to those who have committed themselves to the path of compassion. The boot camp might be run by Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. More likely it would be run by people we've never seen or heard of, just ordinary men and women from all over the world who devote their lives to helping others be free of pain.... When we are training in the art of peace, we are not given any promises that, because of our noble intentions, everything will be okay. In fact, there are no promises of fruition at all. Instead, we are encouraged to simply look deeply at joy and sorrow, at laughing and crying, at hoping and fearing, at all that lives and dies. We learn that what truly heals is gratitude and tenderness. It isn't that we say, "It doesn't matter about me all that much, but if I changed the world, it would be better for other people." It's less complicated than that. We don't set out to save the world; we set out to wonder how other people are doing and to reflect on how our actions affect other people's hearts. ~ Pema Chödrön

All your life you are told the things you cannot do.
All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough.
They'll say you're the wrong height or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this.
THEY WILL TELL YOU NO, a thousand times no until all the no's become meaningless.
All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly.
They will tell you no.

And YOU WILL TELL THEM YES.

Can you install LOVE?

Customer Service Rep: Can you install LOVE?

Customer: I can do that. I'm not very technical, but I think I am ready to install now. What do I do first?

Customer Service Rep: The first step is to open your HEART. Have you located your HEART ma'am?

Customer: Yes I have, but there are several programs running right now. Is it okay to install while they are running?

Customer Service Rep: What programs are running ma'am?

Customer: Let me see....I have PASTHURT.EXE, LOWESTEEM.EXE, GRUDGE.EXE, and RESENTMENT.COM running right now.

Customer Service Rep: No problem. LOVE will automatically erase PASTHURT.EXE from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longer disrupt other programs. LOVE will eventually overwrite LOWESTEEM.EXE with a module of its own called HIGHESTEEM.EXE. However, you have to completely turn off GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM. Those programs prevent LOVE from being properly installed. Can you turn those off ma'am?

Customer: I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

Customer Service Rep: My pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke FORGIVENESS.EXE. Do this as many times as necessary until GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM have been completely erased.

Customer: Okay, I'm done. LOVE has started installing itself automatically. Is that normal?

Customer Service Rep: Yes it is. You should receive a message that says it will reinstall for the life of your HEART. Do you see that message?

Customer: Yes I do. Is it completely installed?

Customer Service Rep: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other HEARTS in order to get the upgrades.

Customer: Oops...I have an error message already. What should I do?

Customer Service Rep: What does the message say?

Customer: It says "ERROR 412 - PROGRAM NOT RUN ON INTERNAL COMPONENTS". What does that mean?

Customer Service Rep: Don't worry ma'am, that's a common problem. It means that the LOVE program is set up to run on external HEARTS but has not yet been run on your HEART. It is one of those complicated programming things, but in nontechnical terms it means you have to "LOVE" your own machine before It can "LOVE"others.

Customer: So what should I do?

Customer Service Rep: Can you find the directory called "SELF ACCEPTANCE"?

Customer: Yes, I have it.

Customer Service Rep: Excellent, you are getting good at this.

Customer: Thank you.

Customer Service Rep: You're welcome. Click on the following files and then copy them to the "MYHEART" directory: FORGIVESELF.DOC, SELFESTEEM.TXT, REALIZEWORTH.TXT, and GOODNESS.DOC. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching any faulty programming. Also, you need to delete SELFCRITIC.EXE from all directories, and then empty your recycle bin afterwards to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer: Got it. Hey! My HEART is filling up with really neat files. SMILE.MPG is playing on my monitor right now and it shows that WARMTH.COM, PEACE.EXE, and CONTENTMENT.COM are copying themselves all over my HEART!

Customer Service Rep: Then LOVE is installed and running. You should be able to handle it from here. One more thing before I go...

Customer: Yes?

Customer Service Rep: LOVE is freeware. Be sure to give it and its various modules to everybody you meet. They will in turn share it with other people and they will return some really neat modules back to you.

Customer: I will. Thank you for your help.

Confidence for when you doubt,
Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life."

Surah 27, Ayat 48 And there were in the city nine individuals, who worked corruption in the land and did not set things right.....

50. They schemed a scheme and We schemed a scheme, while they were unaware.

51. See then what was the outcome of their scheming: We destroyed them together with all their people.

52. Their houses are in ruin, on account of their wrongdoing. There is a sign for a people who know.

53. And we delivered those who believed and were God-fearing.

MONEY

It can buy a House But not a Home It can buy a Bed

But not Sleep

It can buy a Clock But not Time It can buy you a Book But not Knowledge

It can buy you a Position

But not Respect

It can buy you Medicine

But not Health

It can buy you Blood But not Life

It can buy you Sex

But not Love

So you see money isn't everything. And it often causes pain and suffering. I tell you all this because I am your Friend, and as your Friend I want to take away your pain and suffering...

So send me all your money and I will suffer for you.

This is worth sharing (wish I could say I created it, but I didn't): I do not know where this began but do not let it end with you. Pass it onband may it span our planet and heal.

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,

We became one color.

As we carried each other down the stairs of the

burning building,

We became one class.

As we lit candles of waiting and hope,

We became one generation.

As the firefighters and police officers fought their

way into the inferno,

We became one gender.

As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength,

We became one faith.

As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement,

We spoke one language.

As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,

We became one body.

As we mourned together the great loss,

We became one family.

As we cried tears of grief and loss,

We became one soul.

As we retell with pride of the sacrifice of heroes,

We become one people.

We are

One color

One class

One generation

One gender

One faith

One language

One body

One family

One soul

One people

We are The Power of One.

We are United.

We are America.

This candle was lit on the 11th of September, 2001.

Please pass it on to your friends & family so that it

may shine all across America.

MOMS ARE SMARTER...

My son came home from school one day,
with a silly grin on his face,
He thought he was smarter than me, his Mom,
and could put me in my place.

HE SAID:
Guess what I learned in Civics Two,
that's taught by Mr. Wright,
It's about the laws of the land today,
its called THE CHILDREN'S BILL OF RIGHTS.

IT SAID:
I don't have to clean my room,
I don't have to cut my hair.
Nobody can tell me what to eat,
My freedom of speech is guaranteed.
Its my choice of what I read, or watch on TV.

I have freedom of religion,
and regardless of what you say,
I don't have to ask your God for help ---
I DON'T HAVE TO PRAY.

I can wear an earring in my ear,
And, if I want, can pierce my nose.
It's my choice if I so desire,
to tattoo Satan's numbers across my toes.

AND if you try to spank me,
I will charge you with the crime,
and I can back up all my charges,
with the marks on my behind.

HE SAID:
Don't ever touch me,
this body is only for my use,
not for your hugs and kisses and stuff,
that's just another form of child abuse.

HE CONTINUED WITH:
Don't fill my head with morals,
like your mama did to you,
That's what's called mind control,
And it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights,
you can't do a thing to me,
I can call Children's Services,
better known as C. S. D.

MY TURN!!!!

My very first impression was,
to toss this boy out the door,
But here was a chance to teach him a lesson,
for once and ever more.

I took my time and mulled it over,
I couldn't let this go.
This kid of mine didn't realize,
that he was messing with a pro!

AND AWAY WE GO.............
The next day we went shopping,
and in spite of every plea,
I didn't buy him 501s
or shirts designed by Nike.

I had called and talked to C. S. D.,
they said they didn't care,
if I bought him K-Mart shoes,
or a pair of Nike Airs.

AND THEN:
I canceled his appointment
to test his driving skills,
I'd probably be dead by now,
if only looks could kill!

I SAID:
There's no time to stop and eat,
or pick up stuff to munch,
I think you should follow C. S. D.'s advice,
And make yourself a sack lunch.

So, what if you are too hungry,
to wait 'til dinner time?
Well, we're having mushrooms and spinach,
Cause it's a favorite dish of mine.

He ASKED:
Can we stop to get a movie,
so I can watch it on the VCR?
Absolutely not! I sold the TV in your room
and bought new tires for my car.

I also rented out your room,
you really don't need a bed.
C.S.D. says all that's required of me
is to put a roof over your head.

I only have to buy your clothes,
and the food that you must eat,
The money you used to get for an allowance,
will buy me something neat.

No more eating after we shop,
no more joking along the way,
I too have a BILL OF RIGHTS,
that goes into effect today!
What's the matter, are you crying?
Are you down on your knees?
Why are you asking God for help?.........

WHY NOT CALL THE C.S.D?

As the heart of the wayfarer

turns to the Beloved

so the heart of the world turns.

Silently we each bring

the scent of love

into the marketplace

of our ordinary lives

where it touches

the hearts of others.

Unknowingly

those around us

are awakened

to the joy

that has been missing

from life--

for too long

life has been

without the scent

of the sacred.

When this returns

to our city streets

it will draw people

to the garden

of their soul

and a deep hunger

will begin

to be

satisfied.
