Only cos I'm as far down now as I was high last weekend.

It hasn't taken long to suss out how to cope with our new strike force. Hardly had a kick.

And is Robby Elliot really the answer ? All I seemed to see was him lofting it forward so our five footer could win a heading contest against one of their eight footers.

Devoid of guts, invention and any idea of how to get through their defence.

Back to their normal worst as far as I could see.

And why do I still sh1t meself whenever the ball goes anywhere near Warren Barton ?

This is post match depression. If anybody can point out anything good at all about that performance, I'd be over the moon to have it spelled out.

What was the point of last weekend ? other than to know that manure must be wondering how that bunch of deadbeats could have taken all three points.

An off day ? Too bliddy true. Did anybody really believe it would be any different ?

I would have preferred to lose against Man U and win today. A good performance against Man U and 3 points in London would have made more sense than the garbage we've seen today.

It's NUFC all over, like: beat Man Utd, then lose at some mediocre hell hole.

PB, I'm not feeling any better than you - that was arguably the worst performance for several seasons - absolutely gutless.

I'm having increasing difficulty accepting our ongoing inability to do simple things like mark opponents at corners and FK's. This is not down to a lack of talent, but a lack of application and discipline, something that should not be accepted at this level. Those who can't cut out these elementary errors should be firmly shown the door - they aren't going to change.

The real problem, of course, is m/f. The game today was not dissimilar to the first half hour at Boro. The two wide men were largely anonymous, leaving the two blerks in the middle outnumbered, and unable to cope. This then puts severe pressure on the back line, who made things infinitely worse by making a whole string of individual errors.

I have a strong feeling the two wingers are the key to everything. If they play like they did against Man U we look like a decent team: if they play like they did today, and in the 1st period at The Riverside, then we get buried.

Pit Bill, I'be been trying to think of something to take from the performance. The only thing is that, at least the media and the team will shut up about how we are going to be good this season, or win something, etc and at least we won't be featured in every newspaper, on every sports channel etc. I much prefer it when it's quiet and we slowly get on with the job in hand. (That hardly ever happens like...)

There that's the only vaguely positive thing I can think of!

certainly Bobby must realise that we need more creative options in the side. We must decide whether Acuna, Bassedas and Lee are going to do the business for us.

Hey stop it.

It wasn't as bad as Charlton last year, really it wasn't. Lots of players had poor games but no one stopped trying. The just weren't goo enough on the day.

Given couldn't fo anything with the goals. Barton I felt sorry for. Having played him out of position last week, it has clearly knocked his confidence. To play him out of position again this week was terrible management. He did the right thing in backing off from Di Canio, there is no point tackling a guy when yo might give a penalty away, it is far better to jockey him into a shooting position, and block your fellow defender from getting a tackle in. Elliot, okay, nothing special Dabs/O'Brien should be banned/fined if they cross the half way line. They aren't midfield play makes so why pretend. Distin didn't make much of an impression at all. Midfield, what midfield ? Solano was hopeless, none existent. Acuna runs around, Lee doesn't. Robert seemed to never get the ball and when he did he wasn't up for it.

I'd like to say West Ham were good but I'm not sure they were. Nice footballers, too clever for ours but still not strong in midfield.

As long as Robert Lee has one good game in two or three he's going to be picked as first choice. There is no telling when he'll be good and when poor. While he has that level of inconsistency then we have to accept days like Man U and days like West Ham.

I felt today wasn't as bad as Charlton last year, but its okay Gary Speed resumes training soon.

Bellamy and Sharer worked their socks off, Shola is great.

Ok bad stuff, very bad ,hoofing ball upfield hopefully.

But trying to be vaguely unbiased DiCanio is a joy to watch. Stands out from the dross in the PL. Sorry honest opinion.

Anyway lads and lasses worse things happen at sea always darkest b4 the dawn er and other trite expression.

nil desperandum

Tired and emotional as they say

Remember West ham have been missing Di Canio and Kanoute this season. Those two seemed to be involved in almost everything.

And Hutchison is a complete tart.

I've thought of something to cheer us up: we now only need 34 points to avoid relegation...

-- Anonymous, September 23, 2001

That's just depressed me more Dougal :-(

-- Anonymous, September 23, 2001

Well, there are 33 more games to play... so we need just over one point a game. Oh, I see what you mean...

Good lord, people! Have we all forgotten some of the dross we had to watch last season? Charlton being a prime example? Not only did we play badly, but not a single player looked like he could even be @rsed about it.

Today wasn't that bad. We looked typically clueless. Is anyone really that surprised? London, WHam, been on an unusually long streak of not losing, Sky match, etc. It would have been a shocker if we'd gotten anything out of this. Maybe it's cause my expectations were so low going in that I'm not so upset. We did actually slightly(very!) exceed my personal expectations. Bellamy worked hard, Shearer worked hard, Acuna worked hard. The rest of the team looked like they were trying, but really didn't have much clue. Like none of them were quite sure of where they needed to be. Somehow they've forgotten what they did that worked so well up until now. That's the part that annoys me the most. Especially as this is not a new problem. Still, it's only 1 game, so no point getting suicidal until we see if it eally is business as usual, or if we really have turned some kind of corner and today was just a blip.

Bring on Leicester! HOway the lads!!

Personally I think we should consider ditching one of our wingers for away games & have another man in the middle. We were completely over- run in midfield yesterday and whilst it's exciting to have the option of 2 wide men they're not much use if the lads in the centre of the park can't get the ball to them. Also, I think one or two people are being a bit harsh on Robert. Agreed, he had a quiet game, but it's worth noting that we could easily have been discussing how he made 2 more goals (the penalty that wasn't given and the terrific low cross he put in in the first half). He has made things happen in every game this season despite the fact that in most of them we simply haven't been getting the ball to him enough. Which brings me on to my next point - just how long is it going to be before the players realise that after a couple of years without a decent left side option, they've now got a great one? We seemed to look to Solano every time, especially in the first half, and whilst O do rate him he's not in good form at the moment. I'm as baffled as everyone else by Barton coming back into the side, he was poor all game & looked like a park player when Di Canio scored - the space he showed him on the outside was amateurish to say the least. The marking from the whole of the back 4 was dreadful, paticularly from Dabizas & O'Brien - we can only hope Distin is the answer because we're going to continue to ship goals until we sort out this area. To their credit Bellamy, Lee and Acuna ran their socks off (though the latter pair to little effect) but the rest of them need a good kick up the arse - our next game is against a similarly hard working but unexceptional side & if we're going to do anything this season we're going to have to start picking up points against teams like this.

Spot on Andy about not being too hard on Robert (except for untucking his shirt near the end - might as well wave your arse at the opposition with a white flag tucked prominently between your cheeks). Same for Distin - if his distribution is still as woeful in a few months time then be my guest folks and crucify him, but at least he knows how to tackle a ball cleanly unlike most of the other useless twats masquerading as defenders

Sorry Ciara but the dross we had to watch last season is the very reason I'm so down in the dumps. Saturday's performance signifies no progress whatsoever - everything appears to be different but nothing's changed.

I really do hope it isn't going to be another season of neutrals scratching their heads and saying 'How did that shower come away with a result like that ?', on the odd occasion we repeat the manure thing, but generally repeating Saturday's horror as if it was the season game plan.

Trying to retain a bit of equilibrium, I suppose, on the basis of what we'd seen before Saturday, it's too early to say that it was the manure result that was the one off, rather than Saturday's.

So, roll on Wednesday.

Upbeat ? I'm still kakkin me keks.

Oops. How did that happen ?

-- Anonymous, September 24, 2001

Bliddy hell, it's definitely got to me.

Everywhere you see 'Saturday', make the appropriate substitution, which I think should be 'Sunday', but I'm not even sure of that now.

Those useless buggas have a helluva lot to answer for. The senility is enough of a problem without their contribution making it a thousand times worse.
