Savage & his penalty

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I know it's yesterday's news but only just seen the incident. I can't see what the fuss was abou, it was a stonewall pen, he made sure he got it (then so does Shearer, Owen, Hesky in that situation) and he was pleased. If our players showed that amount of passion we wouldn't have had such a dull season last term. He was fouled, got a pen to get his club their first win and save his manager's job. He was right to be pleased. Derby should be fined for the antics of their players & stewards.

It was a penalty, but would you not say he over-celebrated winning it? And in a manner that could have caused a crowd disturbance?

The hair made his celebrations look worse.

The accepted way to "celebrate" winning a penalty is to leap to you feet looking agrieved to have been robbed of a clear, goalscoring opportunity or to get up very quietly with eyes down in shame at having dived like a big girl. Ms Savage offered us a new reaction and provoked an understandable one.

It was a questionable pen, 'cos he deffo 'won' the referee over. His celebrations and hair were a disgrace...in equal measure

He's a geek - and a well-known cheat, even if not in this case. He's getting himself the sort of reputation that will see him 'nailed' sooner or later, and frankly the sooner the better.

Oh yes, and if we ever signed the ponce I'd apply to become a mackem - probably wouldn't be accepted mind! ;o{)

Just noticed an apt metaphor in an article in an article called "The spirit of fair play takes a dive" in the Telegraph today by Paul Hayward - "Leicester's Robbie Savage - a Swan Vesta on football's paraffin lake ........."
Good article actually.

It was a certain penalty, as Dave said, Derby were in the wrong going after him, it's well within the rules to celebrate a penalty like that.

Interesting story on Yahoosports this morning about the Savage man:

Robbie Savage admitted he has received some frightening hate mail, but has laughed off suggestions he is a cheat.

Savage was involved in ugly scenes against Derby last week after his celebration at the award of a last minute penalty sparked fury on the pitch and later in the tunnel. He has since received some poison pen letters following the incident and commented: "Some of it is quite frightening. I've had people threatening to come up and 'do me over' and stuff like that and it's not nice for my family."

The Wales international often comes in for stick from the stands because of his long blonde hair, but admitted he is thinking of changing his appearance so he is not such an obvious target. Speaking to the News of the World, Savage added: "Perhaps the easiest thing would be to shave it off. Maybe then I wouldn't be such a soft and noticeable target."

But the player has rebuked suggestions he is a cheat, after his tumble in the box last week following a challenge from Derby's Danny Higginbotham sparked controversy and accusations of diving. He added: "If I am such a terrible cheat, why have I never been booked for diving? Why have I never been sent off in my career? And why have I never even served a suspension during a season?
"I've not punched anyone. I've not elbowed anyone. I am an honest player. I'm not the most skilful but I'll give 100 per cent commitment".
"I like to have a banter with the crowd. Why is it so often said there are no characters in the game
?"

Clearly a misunderstood shrinking violet. Tosser!

Great article in this morning's Mail on Sunday by Patrick Collins. He obviously has no time whatsoever for Savage and his self-appointed status as a "character". He mentions that both Savage and Wise are possibly going to be called before the FA for some daft T shirts they wore and showed during the game against Boro. Collins refers to Wise as "a small yet irksome blot on the landscape" thus demonstrating once again why he is my favourite football writer!
