How would this turn out if Osama turned himself in?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

If Osama went to the Taliban headquarters and asked to give himself up to the American authorities, what would happen?

Do we have enough evidence to prosecute him?

Wouldn't that eliminate war?

Wouldn't his chances be better if he did give up? It might take the wind out of our sails, and we might have to let him go -- based on this case -- but isn't this a nation of laws?

It should not eliminate "the war". This war is or should be against terrorism and the arrest, lynching or "shot while attempting to escape" of bin Lauden is not the end of terrorists.

We should be committed to eliminating terrrorist groups root and branch. This is why I think the government is preparing us for a long drawn out process. You can cut off one head but many others will then spring up. We have to prosecute this war as far as possible to reduce the threat of terrorist activities to as little as possible.

This is why obtaining broad support from other nations and why directing consequences against governments that harbor and abet terrorists is necessary in my opinion.

"Wouldn't his chances be better if he did give up? "

What you have asked illustrates exactly where most of America's collective head is at this moment - and it is not a well-lit spot. You apparently have littel or no understanding of where the Bin Ladens of this world are coming from, what motivates them, what causes them to do what they do.

Bin Laden isn't the least bit interested in improving his "chances", in fact I doubt that he believes in the concept of chance at all. With him, God (Allah) reigns supreme, and what's more, is directing his path. It's inconceivable that anyone holding his beliefs would willingly surrender to what he considers to be infidels, or surrender to anyone for that matter. He considers himself a defender of the Islamic faith and their holy lands, and has stated many times in interviews that he will defend Islam to the last drop of his blood.

The only thing the West could possibly offer him would be a humiliating show trial, then either execution or a life sentence. To think that he would accept such a fate is to be ignorant of the mindset of Islam. To men like Bin Laden, dying well is a paramount issue in their life.

It just isn't going to happen, dear.
