greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

For anyone who wants information on where to give, I saw this site listed on TV last night. www.helping.org You can donate online to very specific organizations, or get their addresses and mail it in. For instance, I clicked on IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) Charity Fund, scroll down to IAFF establishes charity fund and click read more. They give their mailing address in Washington and you can also send your condolences on this site. All are legit sites, for instance the Red Cross and others.

Also, needed to add that when you get to the site and see the lists of charities, you will see "donate now" underneath each one. When you click it, it does not automatically ask you for info to donate, but rather give information on these charities. You then can donate by clicking a seperate box, or scroll down and read more on these charities and get their mailing addresses. It's a good site that puts all of the charities in one place for us to help.

Be very careful who you give money to, 'specially on-line with a credit card (something I never do. I send a check snail mail for anything I do.) Double check addresses where you send checks. It's been reported that the scam slobs are popping up all over to take advantage of the tragedy.

Yes, its always a good idea to be careful and aware. However, there are plenty of scam artists around utilizing every available tool, always has been. Your credit card number can be stolen for sleazy intent in any number of fairly easy ways, but the internet is only suspect because it is is new to people. I, and millions of others, buy any manner of things over the internet every week with no problems whatsoever.

Blessings,

I too have heard of the scams out there since the tragedy and it really is som callous for folks to capatilize on tragedy and further hurt others. I was watching the news and it was mentioned that there were several scam sites for doinations of money,. etc but the one that wa sreally "low" wa sthe site where loved ones could post who was alive and survived and then later found this to be a hoax anbd they were still missing or dead.

Yea, I've also heard of the scam sites, too. But this site was listed along with other reputible sites. I've never used a credit card through the internet, that is why I gave the info about the mailing addresses.

The Hunger Site (which normally donates food to the needy around the world) is hosting a click and donate program for the WTC and Pentagon disasters. Just go to their site ( www.thehungersite.com ) and click where it says "click here to donate". Your click automatically donates a pre-determined amount of food and ssupplies - there's no put of pocket expense to you. The sponsors of the site (whose ads come up when you click) do all the donating for you. You can click once per day, I believe.
