Bloody sound problems in DOS, again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Hi

Just did a fresh install of Windows ME......

When I run a game in DOS I get 'cannot initialize audio' ?????

I know this should be working, worked fine before the reinstall....

Im using DOS mame, Winme, soundblaster 1024 live.......

Someone once told me how to fix this and I think it was something to do with setting up the sound card for DOS........

I don't wanna use the Win version of mame as I prefer dos and I know it works on this system.........

Thanks in advance

I have never run a Dos based mame, but i have run plenty of DOS based games, you should try checking your autoexec.bat and config.sys for the setup information for your soundcard, if u do a "shut down to DOS mode" from windows, then the configuration files (autoexec and config) will be setup for windows and not DOS, so the wrong drivers will be loaded. One way around this is to do a dual boot, running maybe win3.11/DOS and winME, there having two sets of Autoexecs and Config.sys's one used when using DOS the other used when using Win ME, another way to fix it is to use a DOS boot disc with the correct drivers setup in your config.sys file on the bootdisk, so whenever u want to use your DOS based mame then just boot from your boot disk and the drivers will be loaded in for your soundcard. If u are not really sure about wat i am talking about above, then just let me know and i'll try and make things clearer for you.\

cheers and good luck Jarrod.

P.s go on cave in get Windows mame, makes life easier :)

Winxp!? Thats worse than ME for pure DOS. Heres what you do.

Wipe the computer and install win98SE edit the c:\msdos.sys file and remove the read only setting. Change the loadGui = 1 line to 0. Your computer will now boot in to DOS.

Your soundcard shoulde be a ISA soundblaster16, about £10 on ebay. You need ctcm.exe and diagnose.exe. Add the lines to your autoexec....

c:\sb16\ctcm.exe c:\sb16\diagnose /s

Your computer will now boot in to dos and have sound setup.

Finally you need to add the various memory bits to your config, himem, emm386, cwsdpmi etc, Im working on the best settings for this at the moment.

I have a PC mounted inside an arcade cabinet using these settings and it boots from cold to arcadeos game selection in about 20 seconds, with full sound. Good luck, hope this helps some people.
