Just watched the incident at home again and Shearer was brilliant in interview:

ITV pundit:" What about the Roy Keane incdent?"

SOSAS: "That's Manchester United's problem."

Al would have kicked his lily-white arse all the way back to Tipperary. Fabulous end to a fabulous match, although for half an hour in the second half I wanted to be anywhere but SJP. Still, home again and the chance to hug my little boy for the first time in a fortnight: hold on to this feeling lads and lasses, we'll surely get stuffed at Upton Park next week ;-)

I've got to say that Roy Keane aura's hangs over Manchester United like a fresh, steaming dog turd. They are a fine team who have been a footballing credit to the PL for several seasons now. However, they are despoiled by this common thug who's behaviour has nothing in common with the traditions of such a fine Club.

His disgraceful violent tackle on Rob Lee cynically put the game's dominant player up till that point out of the game - what a surprise! The tackle probably merited a red card in itself. However, another appalling, sight-impaired Referee indulgently didn't even show him a yellow.

RK's late infantile shenanigan's against AS showed him in his true light - a back-street yob.

In some respects I wish Becks and others hadn't prevented him from launching another attack on Alan Shearer, after he had been shown the red card - I strongly suspect AS would have decked the b@st@rd. As it was, Alan's utter disdain for the prat was probably better for all concerned.

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

There were plenty of shouts in the pub for Al to thump him. ;-)

Agree, Keane is an idiot and really disgraced the whole team and their efforts today.

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

The usual even-handed, scrupulously impartial words of Sir Alex Ferguson ref RK's sending off:

"I don't think it's a serious offence, but in the last minute of the game the crowd are going to force the referee into a situation like that. A home player would probably not have been sent off."

Presumably, it was the crowd that insisted that RK throw the ball at AS's head and then swing a punch at him? All this after he went entirely unpunished for crippling Rob Lee earlier. Tossers - both of 'em!

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

Lobbing the ball at the back of a greedy twat's head Smiler is hardly the mark of A THUG.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

I agree LR. But the reaction after being shown a yellow card was.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Open yer eyes LR! After earlier crippling Rob Lee - Keane threw, not lobbed, the ball at the back of AS's head. He then swung a punch at him - the fact that he didn't connect was entirely coincidental. After being red-carded, he then made vigorous attempts to assualt AS, only failing by being restrained by 3 players.

If you feel inclined to defend the thug and this disgusting behaviour - behaviour that has no place in game - then you and Taggart must be from the same school of selective amnesia, and it does neither of you any credit.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Aye - I think you'll be "Smiler" for a few more days Clarky ;-)

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

I must admit I was absolutely delighted with Shearer's reaction to the whole situation. Sure he said a few words to Keane (with a smile on his face) but the fact that he did not at any point get involved in the sort of stupid, infantile, macho response which you so often see from the immature male members of the species was a sight to behold. Well done macho man Keane - a three match ban - that's really showed Shearer who's boss!

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

No Jacko....picking up three trophies in one season is REALLY showing WGB who's boss :-)

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

LR, I think you lot worry about Shearer's trophylessness more than he does.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

... it was a great response from LR though! ;o{)

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Anyone seen the speculation on TOTT about a further fracas in the tunnel?

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

There was definite scrapping at the tunnel entrance as they left, I'd guess it was the Newcastle players who started it to

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

MacB, on TOTT they are saying that Big Al showed Keane a thing or two about martial arts after the latter tried to re-open discussions by taking a swing. This may be bollox of course.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

PS. I'd love to know what Shearer said to get Keane so wound up.. Also, did anyone see Shearer having a little discussion with Barthez after he scored? Barthez promptly ran after the referee.. It's actually quite a skill to wind people up then look the picture of innocence.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Childish male response again LR. And of course, Keane didn't win three trophies in a season did he - wasn't he suspended for the Champions League Final? Who'd have thought it!

I'm so glad you seem pleased to have a total thug like Keane in your team. Whatever you say about his abilities as a player - and they are not in doubt by me - you must agree that it is the sort of behaviour of which he is so often capable that does your club's image no good whatsoever. Once again the tabloids have rolled out his scandalous disciplinary record. With all the suspensions he's had he must have missed virtually a full season at your place. You're damned lucky you've got a bloke like Beckham who seems to have learned from his former errors and stopped Keane doing something even more stupid yesterday.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Don't let it get to you Douggie...everyone has a hate figure. Most of our players except Dennis Irwin or Wes Brown are someone's hat figure. At Newcastle we like to goad the greedy one....rememebr the 5:1...hee hee.

Look...it works both ways...he went out of his way to stay calm and smug at Keane..he talks in terms of "they don't like it up 'em" and his celebrations are revolting when he scores against us. Snap!

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Our image as a club Jacko is mythically tarnished anyway. If it wasn't Roy it would be Eric....if it wasn't Eric it would be Norman.

All clubs have 'em....live with it.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

I chatted to a guy on the journey home who was in the Strawberry corner near the 'action'. He said it was clear what the conversation was

Shearer was doing his time wasting bit and Keane suggested that he should play football rather than waste time. Shearer responded that maybe Keane had the urgency to play because he was again on the losing side at Newcastle.

Sounds a reasonable discussion to me.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

LOL, MacB. LR, you are right of course although Andy Cole was the only one of your players who got any real abuse plus sporadic booing of Keane after that tackle on Lee. I don't dislike any of your players although Keane is a bit of a w....r. The only time Shearer has celebrated in a way that would annoy you lot was in the 5-0 and let's face it, your lot had it coming on that occasion.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

I was disapointed that keane was sent off. Yess I hate the twat, but his dismisal made the headlines more than the result and gave taggart something to talk about rather than his teams defeat.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

Always admired Al's sense of calm and reason. :-)

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

I watched in disbelief, RK's behaviour was lacking in discipline and composure...........what did I expect?? AFTER WE HAD WON, I watched in further amazement as various man u players refused to shake hands with our players. And they wonder why most people dislike them as a collective unit. Childish, surely and spoilt. I think if keane had made contact with shearer he would not have made it out of the ground unharmed...

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

AFTER WE HAD WON, I watched in further amazement as various man u players refused to shake hands with our players.

clarify that statement sour puss!

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

What needs to be clarified the "after we had" won statement 4-3 or the refusal to shake hands? Not being at the match I watched on TV, after the games conclusion and players were coming off, I watched as beckham and Neville slap away the outreached hand of two Newcastle players. And no it wasn't a token handshake it was a point blank refusal...spoilt children.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

Alan Shearer says he has the utmost respect for Roy Keane and that he is a fiery player but if you take that away he'd not be the same. He confirms his part was the crime of running down the clock.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

Syme...I don't belive it. Still...can't say that it bothers me. It didn't bother me when all but one Liverpool players left the pitch at Wembley '96 after they had collected their losers medals.

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

Particularly for Bobby...Not the picture, but a good one nevertheless, is in an amusing piece on the BBC site.

Red Rag to a Bull

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

LR, when your lot won the championship in 93-94 with Blackburn second you may be astonished to learn that in the final weeks of the season I actually WANTED you lot to win it. At the time, in my naivety, I loathed what Walker was doing at Blackburn by simply trying to buy success. I didn't know then, of course, what we all know now!

Of course, Keane had only been there twelve months then so his influence hadn't become so all pervading. I never had a problem with Cantona - as far as I'm concerned kicking cockneys is perfectly acceptable and should be more actively encouraged - possibly by government training schemes!

To an outsider like myself, it is Keane who represents all that is "bad" in your club. He has immense talent but the self-control of an intellectually challenged 10 year old. And Taggart made him captain.

Oh and having checked what I said earlier, I find it is true that Al has as many European Cup Winners medals as Mr Irish Madperson!

Really must learn how to spell href. Trying again...
Red Rag to a Bull

"I never had a problem with Cantona - as far as I'm concerned kicking cockneys is perfectly acceptable and should be more actively encouraged"

If he liked kicking Cockneys so much I'm surprised he didn't get tempted a few times at Old Trafford

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

"I didn't know then, of course, what we all know now"!

What do you all know now Jacko? There is nothing "bad" about our club. We don't do anything more or less on average than any other club...we're just under the microscope. Comes with the territory. I understand your need to justify your loathing for a club you once admired. You feel duped. And you have been...by media hype and good old Britsh herding. Baaaaaaaaaaa!

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

That wasn't meant as a slur on you lot LR - it simply meant that I didn't realise then that every club was going to try to buy success, not just Blackburn and Walker, so you just have to accept it in the end - we're all at it!

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

And are you telling me, btw, that Keane's disciplinary record is "more or less on average" the same as everyone else's! I haven't be duped by the media - I take offence that you think I'm that stupid. I simply reach my own conclusions on what I see. I appreciate, however, that you made those comments because I wasn't making myself clear originally in the snippet you quoted so I'll forgive you on this occasion! Do it again and I'll 'ave you!!

And those sheep noises you make? Welsh blood perhaps? ;-)

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

For the avoidance of any doubt - RK has been sent off 9 times while playing for Man U! Impressive, eh?

-- Anonymous, September 17, 2001

LR-- Keane reacts like an idiot-again-and disgraces himself and team.He not only threw the ball at Shearer which was no big deal--but he then takes a wild swing at Shearer who sensibly doesn't react--and after he is red-carded for the latter then makes every effort to get to Shearer again only to be restrained by team members! We know that players, especially those like Keane who are hot-blooded and hate to lose, but for the manager to then make comments indicating that it was all about nothing, as Taggart did, is disgusting. Ferguson really does not have an ounce of fair play or sportsmanship in him.And thats why your club is so disliked--not because of envy for your very real success over the past 10 years. Fifties Fan
