Thoughts on the match

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I said when we wnet 3-3 that a great team would have taken them apart and a good team would have held on>

I guess we must be a good team with character - most teams would have folded when it went 3-3 but we didn't. We showed amazing character just like we showed against Troyes. Robert and Bellamy seem like God sends and Shearer is most definitely back.

Reasons to be cheerful?

I watched the game on telly. REALLY great game! We played well the first half. Roberts goal was fantastic, Lees wasnt bad either. When we went 3-1 up thanks we played well for another 5 minutes or so then Man U took over the game completly. The last 15 minutes we really came back again and i was great to see Shearer score the winner even if it deflected of Veron. We should any way have had a penaly in the first half.

Keane thrown a ball at Shearer and got sent off. Really great end to the game.

Also met a nice Newcastle supporter who lives in Sweden but is from Newcastle.

GREAT game, great result - we have scored 12 goals in our last three games now...

HOWAY THE LADS!!

I thought the game got really good when I joined in!!

I saw the game live on TV, and what a game it was. I had needed something special to take my mind off the weeks events, and this proved to be it. Absolutely wonderful game. I kept lookin at the bench to see if Keegan was there. But no, we won this 4-3 classic. Praise to all the lads. Magnificent entertainment, and three points as well. A big thank you to both teams. And a special thanks to Mr. Keane for not getting sent off until the dying seconds. Can't use that as an excuse this time can they. Well done lads.

A special mention for Bellamy too who was my man of the match, only an inch ahead of Robert and Shearer.

Also saw the game on tv and to add my two cents in, we were just great, heck, pure attacking football like those Keegan years. We should have coast to the win after going 3-1 up but we just sat back after the 3rd goal and let them come at us. Something for Bobby to put right no doubt but the team was great. IMHO no one single player should be blamed for any of their goals, they came cos we stopped hassling and harrying them, just waiting for them to come at us. Sort of like opening the garrison gates and inviting them into the castle.

But we got the three points and that's all that matters. I 'll be wearing me Toon top about town tomorrow and probably have Alan's cheeky expression when he pissed Keane off on my face. And as many of you Asian-based mags know, to gloat over Manure's so called Asia fans is too hard to resist.

Oh, and by the way, Keane was only going to get a yellow card for bouncing the ball off Shearer's noggin. It was the "taking a poke" after that, along with knocking the yellow out of the ref's hand that earned him the red. Then he still wanted a "go" after the red. To$$er should get a twleve match ban. The boy's a lunatic. Didn't even get a yellow when he tried to chop Rob Lee in half in the first half. The man has lost his mind.

All I can say is...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I so needed that. :-D

Just a fantastic game of football - played how the game should be played - apart from one sad thug called Keane, who frankly disgraces the shirt he wears. It really was a Keegan throwback - all out attack: no defence.

We really had 12 heroes out there today - the starting 11 plus Barton who came on for Lee at HT - who fought for every ball, and played with pride and committment.

While it may sound rather churlish after such a wonderful victory, defensively we were poor - getting pulled around too easily, and in particular leaving men unmarked on numerous occasions. Having said that our defenders gave their all, none of them played badly, and we were after all playing a very, very fine team.

I thought Rob Lee bossed the game in the 1st half, until he was cynically scythed down by The Thug and unforunately didn't appear for the 2nd half. That Keane wasn't even yellow carded for such a dreadful tackle reflects no credit whatsoever on yet another awful Referee - who had earlier booked Elliott for cleanly winning the ball in a strong challenge on Becks, and also contrived to miss a blatant push on Bellamy in the penalty area.

The loss of Lee was crucial as we never really regained control in m/f, and when Scholes replaced the ineffective AC to play in a 5-man m/f, we were outnumbered and displayed our usual inability to adjust our formation until they had scored two goals to level the score.

To the eternal credit of a visibly tiring Toon team, they didn't try to close out the game out at 3-3 and went all out for the winner. As in other recent games, Bellamy came into his own against a tiring defence - even though he looked knackered himself. Eventually he wriggled past a static Blanc and set up Solano with a great chance. Solano's efffort hit Dodgy Keeper's legs, but AS gleefully slammed in the winner via a deflection.

Going forward we are beginning to look really tasty with Robert and Bellamy in particular developing a bit of a understanding, and AS pulling the strings and knitting everything together - he was a giant of a captain today.

Acuna had perhaps his best game yet in a b&w shirt, and even Solano put himself around. Griffin had a much better game than against Brentford, and individually O'Brien and Dabz often performed heroics - however as a defensive unit they are still far too vulnerable.

Great game, wonderful entertainment, three valuable points against the Champions - and just perhaps something is finally stirring at SJP.

Agree with everything Clarky wrote.
I rushed back to see the game again 7.00 Des show on ITV.
No orgasms for Clive during the commentary - excuses given for Keane's stupidity were offered. Disappointment was evident in the result
Vegetables and the little Scottish tw@t did not say one iota about the Lads performance - every comment was about Manure - their defensive shortcomings etc.. No mention of the brilliance of Bellamy - the first half display of Lee, the polish of Robert, the miraculous recovery of Shearer.
Wor lass reported Ray Stubbs as saying on BBC "what about United at St. Jame's Park..."
Remarkable bias.

HokeyDokey. Have settled down a little bit. Just a little. ;-)

What a great game. About as entertaining as they get. I couldn't believe how well we played apart from that appalling 15min when ManU over-ran us. Even better was Rob Lee's goal shutting up the frickin plastic Mancs sitting behind me. I was ready to smack one who was right in my ear having orgasm's over VanNestleschocolate's goal. You'd think the guy had shot a rocket from the halfway line which looped and curled and did tricks on the way into the net, the way this guy carried on. Funny how he not only shut up after Lee's goal, but got bored(?!) and started dialing his mates to yammer on about skate boarding and how he was 'in a bar watching sah-ker from England'. Geez. The handful of real ManU supporters had wisely moved further down the bar area, but were still outshouted by Toon Army and neutrals.

Anyhoo, everyone knows about the goals. Some of the amusing moments for me were various shots of ManU players getting annoyed, a moment of pigtail pulling(not even grown up enough to be handbags) between Dabs and Becks, and the piece de resistance was Keane getting himself needlessly sent off and Shearer's expression.

Hard to single any of our players out for praise, they all did a great job. Plenty of hard tackles. We weren't going to go down without a fight at least. Anyway, I'm just blabbering. Off to go read some match reports and eagerly awaiting reports from those who were there! BTW, you all sounded wonderful on tv. Loud and clear. :-))

Phew - what a scorcher!

I have probably witnessed the best 90 mins of entertainment that I will see for a long time. The result was (almost) incidental. My congratulations and thanks to the 25 players who played an end-to-end game. In a way, in a match with little aggro, it was unfortunate that one player had to leave the pitch early. But hey, it was ManUre and it was Roy Keane, so nobody can complain - least of all Keane himself who IMHO was lucky not to have had a yellow card for a rash challenge on Rob Lee in the first half which effectively gave away our midfield supremacy.

That this was predominantly the same team that looked so woeful in the first half hour last Saturday at the Riverside, only raising their game when Boro had gone down to 10 men, and again, the nucleus of the team which struggled against a Second Division team on Wednesday. Today, we were outstanding to a man. Can we play you every week?

As YBR said in is post match interview, this one could have been 6-6. The fact that it ended up 4-3 is probably right, tho there was a period in the second half when ManUre scored twice and we might normally have capitulated. That we didn't, and indeed fought back for a deserved winner is absolute credit to every man in a black & white shirt today. From the immaculately observed minute's silence to the final peep from Steve Bennett's whistle, this was a classic. I can't let that minute's silence go by. For the second time in 4 days at SJP, we had to stand to bear witness to the horrible events in New York and Washington (not to mention the tribute to Brian Moore whose death was observed at the England game with equal reverance). This was different. Moore was a great commentator but his passing was natural. This week's tradgedy was anything but. But the 25 players on display today showed that life must, and will, go on. I hope the hearts of the 52,000 plus who witnessed this classic were suitably raised. I can imagine Brian Moore watching over it and thoroughly enoying it all.

But back to the game. In reality, we should have been one up in the first minute when Shearer of all people missed an left foot shot after Brown had slipped on the oily SJP surface (no doubt according to SAF). But given the unexpected time and space, he could only pull his shot wide. Had he realised how much time and space he had, he must be disappointed that he didn't score (but that only lasted 80 minutes or so). However, we didn't have long to wait for the opening goal. And what a cracker it was. A foul by Blanc on Shearer (?) gave us a free kick about 25 yds out level with the edge of the area. Unlike Wednesday when Nobby had contrived to louse up a number of free kicks, Laurent Robert was allowed to do his own stuff and superbly hit a direct shot into the top right corner of the net. Barthez was stranded, probably thinking that there was no way Robert could squeeze the ball over and past the wall on that side. One nil to Wor Froggy!

The game continued at a frenetic pace (let me ask again - was this the same nucleus who had played 120 mins on Wednesday while their opponents enjoyed a 3 day holiday in Greece??). However, we failed to extend the lead and ManUre pulled one back from a well-taken strike by Van Nistelrooy. Questions have to be asked why Andrew Cole was allowed the space for a free header to knock the ball back to RvN, bt he took the goal superbly well. Bu99er. Being ManUre, you might ha ve expected them to turn up the gas and press for the lead, but it was Toon who deservedly went ahead when Rob Lee was allowed far too much space by Blanc (who should have closed him down quicker). For the first time in two years, Rob got a shot on target. I think the only person in the ground more surprised than me was Fabien Barthez who completelt f***ed it up and allowed the ball to escape his grasp and end up in the back of the net. Two down for their Froggy!

The second half started as lively (an understatement if ever I made one) as the first. I should mention the crowd (how could I forget us??). This was the noisiest I have heard SJP since the extension was built. Credit to the ManUre lot who (as usual) made their presence felt. But at last, the sleeping giant seemed to be wakened, and for long periods, it seemed that the whole ground was making a noise. Not just the Gallowgate. Not just the Leazes. Even the bliddy East Stand library was stirred. Perhaps that's a result of the England match letting the noise Genie oot the bag?? I have to say, whenever I see Nic Dabizas cross the half-way line, I check that I have my brown trousers on, but for the second week in a row, he showed the folly of my sartorial dressing. Up he popped again, neatly stoppong a goal-bound Robert thunderbolt to trap the ball, turn and fire in an unstoppable shot past Barthez. Not a good day so far Froggy??

That signalled action from SAF. Off came Coley, to the usual round of applause abuse, and on came the most famous packet of biscuits. The introducton of Ginger Nuts certainly turned the game and gave the midfield iniative to ManUre. Having Rob Lee subbed with Warren Barton was bad enough. To have Veron, Keane and Scholes up against Acuna and Barton seemed a bit unfair IMHO. And not before long, this suprenmacy in midfield paid dividends (even double divi) when first Giggs-Wiggsy and then Veron rifled volleys past Wor Shay. (I have to say, the only decent thing JSV did in the whole game). 3-3. Sh!t - we were gonna lose :-( Where was Wor Froggy?

This period of play was certainly controlled by ManUre, and only the fact that they still weren't beating us allowed me to enjoy some of the best, entertaining football I have seen for a long time (well, since Sven Geordie Erikson's England stuffed Hermann and his mates a couple of weeks ago ;-)) Under normal circumstances, we would have capitulated and ManUre would have scored another goal or two. You've all seen them do it before. But this time, our defence held strong. Distin must be the best buy we have made. Despite sitting on the bench, his presence raised both Dabs and O'Brien's games to levels I haven't seen for a long time and we held well. Talking of the defence, credit must also be given to Andy Griffin who, despite having a bit of a 'mare on Wednesday against Brentford, had a very good game, and showed why YBR had faith in him over the slower Barton. Pick your tema for the opposition, and Griff was the right choice today. On the other side, Robbie Elliott had a cracker, leaving off from his impressive performance on Wednesday. After a slow start to the season, RE is back firing on all cylinders. All this without wor defensive Froggy.

The game went into the last 15 minutes all square, and we started to believe that we could win this one. ManUre had thrown all their impressive might at us and we had held strong. Craig Bellamy continued to impress. He just gets better every game. No doubt spurred by his 12 minute hat-trick on Wednesday (by my reckonning, that should have him scoring 24.5 goals per 90 minutes!), he was a constant threat to two international centre backs. He was instrumental in making the winner, running at, and beating Monsieur White á la ball and crosisng to Nobby who might have scored himself. However, his shot rebounded of Barthez (it's a hard life Froggy) and came straight to Alan Shearer, who was ghosing in "á la Eric" from the right-midfield position (the unkind might say he was too sha99ed to keep up with play having played 290 minutes of football in the past 8 days at this point of the game). We knew where it was going to end up. Unlike last week when Alan simply rifled the ball intot he net, he played a neat shot off a defender, leaving Barthez stranded as the ball went over the line. "Merde" said the Froggy.

Phew - we were back in the lead, but Taggart's men never give up (after all, the game lasts at least 100 minutes) and they could have scored twice more by Scholes (but they didn't, heh heh!). However, there was still time left for the expected. Being 4-3 down is not something they are used to, and Shearer's neat work (ahem) down by the far corner gave them a hoy in. A little gamesmanship from Wor Al. A little petulance from Roy "Nearly Breaks Rob Lee's Legs" Keane. Keane stots the ball off Wor Al's heed - best header he did all day ;-) and a yellow card is produced. This is totally unacceptable to the nice Mr Prawn-Sarnie who inexplicably requested Mr Bennett to pick up the yellow card off the grass and pull a red one out instead. Tee Hee. The showers at SJP must be so good, Roy wants to get in their first (which he has done twice in his last three appearances here). A perfect end to a perfect day! Just to ensure they didn't equalise, YBR replaced the excellent Bellamy with our latest signing. Yes, a Froggy!

PS. Sorry it's a bit late. I dashed back (OK, so what's this thing called the sound barrier?) and made to to The Plough in Powburn to watch the ITV shambles (even Corrie is better - alledgedly). Anyway, after muscling out the local looney, who wanted to watch Dundee vs Celtic (I guess that's the problem with nearly living in Scotland - but there again, everybody in Scotland nearly lives) I managed to persuade them that everybody really wanted my company and I didn't really have to go home to savour it alone. Even the old dear with her half of orange ("I only come in to watch the lottery" - me too, but I paid £392 for the privelidge) was enthralled (or was she p!$$ed off cos she (a) didn't see the lottery and (b) didn't win?).

And to cap it all, that nice Mr Clapton has just popped in to play a live concert. I feel wonderful tonight ;-))

Bellamy was brilliant. Robert scored a stunning goal. Is this what we should come to expect when Robson has a blank cheque book, rather than spending £800k on Wayne Quinn say ? I hope so.

Is Distin the biggest player ever to play for us ?

Next time we play them we should have Dyer and Bellamy and Robert to run at Blank then he'll understand about the pace of the Premiership !!

Sporting quote of the week from Shearer on ITV, "Alan have yo uanything to say about the sending off incident at the end ?", "Well that's Man U isn't it ?". What can he mean ?

And wor lass is back in bed after being rudely awakened at approx 3.37am this morning with me Mark and Nick trying to celebrate Shearers goal quietly!!

Ciara - nice to know that your "Leeds" feeling worked!

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

As usual, Clarky is the voice of rightness :)

I thought Bellamy deserved a goal, but then it was great to see Shearer score the winner. We really are becoming a class act going forward, hopefully Distin will be (one of) the missing piece(s) in the jigsaw.

Also, remember Dyer and Cort are both still to return. Dyer should walk into any team as long as he is fit and on form, but could Carl Cort make it into the team? Shearer has been as great a captain as ever since he has returned from injury and Bellamy can't really be dropped on that sort of form.

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

Screacher, your match report is great, really tells the story of the game well, but who is RB?

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

Not sure how it looked in person, but on tv it looked like Bellamy could've had his goal if he'd bliddy SHOT instead of waiting for an invite. We were going spare in the pub...til he laid off to Solano who's attempt seemed blocked....then suddenly the net was bulging and Shearer was celebrating. The roar was deafening. Sorry, just had to relive it again. :-D

If only this had been a Sunday Sky match, I'd have been able to tape it.

-- Anonymous, September 15, 2001

Yesterday we beat a good team , make no mistake about that, the main factor was we refused to let them boss us ,and attacked them from the off. I use the word good as opposed to great, I am afraid LR that your back 5 will cost you dearly in the heady world of the CL. I can see SAF putting a bid in for Caldwell (S) or the frightening figure of Marvin Andrews of Livvy, congrats to all players , played in a sporting manner until, enough said , he`s a winner , but at what cost?

Enough about the other Utd , we know theres only one UNITED,why is it that any match with that scoreline and entertainment value is always dubbed as a coaches nightmare, that is rubbish, they get paid for being there, the punters who fork out hard earned cash will decide what they want , what the hell is wrong about 2 sets of forwards all doing the biz outclassing the defenders, the other 70% of matches in the season will see the roles reversed . Coaches/pundits have got to understand that we do know the game and treat us with some respect. Two comments from people who attended caught my eye, that the intro of Robert gave us more balance down the left and it shows and Clarky saying that Bellamy gives us pace and MOVEMENT for the full 90. This has been old hat on this forum for two years and it just shows that we do get it right, at the present time it would be our 2 latest recruits who would be most missed if they sustained injury ,who would replace them to add the balance, pace and movement? I have alway`s been an advocate of the busy, nuisance type striker and it looks like Bellamy fills the role superbly ,such is football that in the space of one month it could emerge that which of Shearer/Cort/Shola plays alongside Bellamy, the return of Dyer and how Bobby` uses him will be a major factor during the coming months. There is no way we can sustain that type of effort week in week out that was shown yesterday, hopefully we will be at times in a position to dictate a match. IMHO that the unsung hero in this wee upsurge in our fortunes has been the guy who entered us into the Inter-Toto, the wisest decision for years, not just financially but the ideal prep for the season , getting into the habit of winning , it rubs off on the players. Well done lads, and finally come back MOTD on the Beeb.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Excellent entertainment we played some beautiful football, Rob Lee was massive our game dipped in his absence. Bellamy was deserved MOTM but Shearer ran close if only for winding Woy Keane up. MANU have some fantastic players, Giggs IMO was phenomenal, but we didn't give them any space, every ball was fought for. That is until we went 3-1 up and tried to defend the lead, will we ever learn. With room to ply their trade MANU came at us from all angles and pulled it back to 3-3 in a two minute smash & grab raid. That kick in the behind give us fresh determination and although it could have went either way we got the winner courtesy of THAT man Alan Shearer.

Amazing game, excellent atmosphere with Keane's red card the icing on the cake.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

For once Tony I don't really believe we did sit back on the two goal lead. The players worked incredibly hard yesterday, and following their exertions on Wednesday there were some tired legs out there.

However, the most important factor imho was Scholes introduction for Cole. He played deeper, almost in m/f, leaving us with four at the back marking RVN, and Barton and Acuna marking Scholes, Keane and JSV.

I could actually see this coming, even as Scholes was being introduced - so why our management team couldn't have advised AS how to restructure to adapt to this change is entirely beyond me. I thought Dabz sensed the problem and started pushing into m/f to pick up the spare man, but this only created confusion behind him.

We really must have a pre-conceived plan to deal with this kind of tactical switch, and indeed the reverse switch, so that everyone knows their intended revised roles. Our inability to do this cost us dearly several times last season - including against the mackems at home: it cost us a two goal lead yesterday, and could easily have cost us the match.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Oops, sorry Paul. I must have been carried away (or should have). I can't even say it was intentional as he was playing at LB not RB :-(

Anyway, I've had a word with the powers that be to have it corrected to give Robbie Elliott his due recognition. Funny - when I typed it, the "E" and the "B" keys looked pretty close to each other on the keyboard (that's both "ee"s and both "B"s).

Clarky, I was under the impression that when Scholes came on the idea was for Veron to push up with RVN ?, this obviously did not occurr according to your match comments.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Not noticeably Buff. I think the plan was for any of the m/f players to join RVN as the situation presented itself - viz. the two half chances that fell to Scholes himself. The problem was that we were outnumbered in m/f, and seemed unable to react for a long time.

The point to remember here is that Man U have been playing so far this season with RVN isolated and Scholes in a withdrawn role - so why we hadn't considered the possibility of them playing this way against us, and be able to respond when they did, is a total mystery to me. The simple answer could perhaps be fatigue - we had a number of very weary players by that point.

Not used to losing LR, I've been to your place and I bet you wish you could get going like that at home.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Cheers Clarky, on the match thread when nige gave me the sub`s I commented how Bobby`s hands were tied if he had to make subs for injury or tiredness later in the game, pace of first half I had forcast Barton on for Lee although it was an injury , great result but on reflection flying on a wing and a prayer comes to mind , I am sure Bellamy could do a shift in midfield cover to protect a result but the very qualities of his game, pace/movement make him an ideal outlet up front, The players did everyone proud yesterday, the manager included

With their customary attention to detail, apparently ".co.uk" report that our late defensive substitute yesterday was Shola Ameobi .
I can only assume BR wrote the report!

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

A thoroughly well-deserved win for the lads. We took the game to them and didn't try the suicidal tactic of trying to defend (except for about ten mad minutes in the second half): against this lot, attack is the best sort of defence. We missed a couple of sitters (Acuna and Bellamy missed chances that were easier to put in than to miss) but then, so did they. I thought everyone had a good game, with Bellamy and Robert standing out (along with Rob Lee in the first half) but other players such as Acuna really got stuck in and showed their worth. At times, their forwards were in acres of space, but, as I say, I don't think we planned for this to be a clean sheet day. Well done lads. Just make sure you beat Leicester City now you've shown what you can do.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

Agree with you, Buff, re us playing on a wing and a prayer, especially in the 2nd half. The wonderful thing yesterday, and in most of our games since the Intertoto is that we finally seem to have developed the kind of fight and determination that was missing last season. Just hope we can keep that spirit going the rest of the season.

-- Anonymous, September 16, 2001

It was funny, the thought that Rob Lee was having a fantastic game was just crossing my mind as he got the ball and took off down the pitch to score. Hope his injury isn't too serious. Has anyone heard anything about it?
