NYPost NATIONWIDE VIGIL AT 7 TONIGHT

September 14, 2001 -- Emphasizing the "united" in United States of America, citizens are organizing simultaneous vigils across the country today.

Chain e-mails circulating from New York to California yesterday called on everyone who received one to join in a candle-lighting vigil at 7 p.m. (New York time) today.

"Step out your door, stop your car and light a candle," it read. "We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism."

Another, believed to have originated in Southern California, dubbed today "Flags Across America Day" and urged everyone to display the American flag in their homes or cars.

Amy Sacco, owner of Lot 61 and Bungalow 8 in Manhattan - and one of the biggest Rolodexes in the city - said she forwarded the candle-lighting vigil e-mail to "every single person I know."

"I thought it would be great to do," she said. "I got it from a friend and I spread it out to everyone."

Tammy White, an office worker in Irvine, Calif., said she received both the flag-waving and candle-lighting e-mails yesterday and immediately forwarded them to 100 people.

"It's good to feel part of this huge thing," she said. "We're all trying to come up with ideas of things we can do to help. It's really hard when you're so far away."

The Internet also was flooded with chain e-mails offering words of encouragement and support.

I'll be at a restaurant then with some friends. Curious whether I'll see anything.

I'll be at work. Break time is 7 PM.

I doubt we'll be outside since there is some bad weather around, but in the ourdoor break area, protected from the weather, we should be able to do something.

I sure hope no one gets the idea to do inside. The dust created from the mail can be pretty volatile. No sense doing ourselves in, right?
