THE FOCUS OF THIS FORUM

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News : One Thread

I don't care if there IS a plot by faceless persons in black helicopters spreading chemtrails all over the sky. I'm too old and feeble to do anything about it if they are. But I CAN put together a stash that will see my family through most emergency situations. And, as with Y2K, if a situation requires more than we have on hand, then we're screwed anyway.

The people on the committee who run this forum (yes, there IS a committee, it's not just me) came over here--and stayed--because they feel the same way. We wanted a place where we didn't have to wade through numerous ponderous threads to get the information we need to get us through whatever life throws at us. Life has changed some, but not by much; only the focus of the trouble has changed, from natural disasters to terrorist acts. We simply revert to the notion of stashing for long emergencies, as we did back in the early days of TB2K.

You have conspiracy theory ideas? Fine. Take them to one of the forums that specializes in them. What we want here is information we can use on an everyday basis, ideas on what to stash and the best place to get it.

If you can find or have saved pertinent information from the original TB2K or have since found better, please start a thread. I'll put in a new category--Preps (how original!).

yep. good idea. Best to get started before everyone else thinks of it.

That should give us about a year considering the speed at which most of the idiots think.

Ya know, I have been eyeing those stacking plastic drawer things that are in the stores now. Rubbermaid, I think. Some have wheels, which make them easier to use than cardboard file boxes, or those huge plastic storage things that don't fit anywhere. I wonder how high I can stack them drawer things?

I've got several--buy the sturdiest you can, paying particular attention to the bits housing the castors, otherwise they'll bend over! I would suggest buying some castors and securing them to squares of plywood, then putting the storage systems on those. That way, you can put heavier stuff in them. Things on wheels are VERY useful. Whenever I see good tea trolleys (Am = serving carts) at estate sales, I pick them up. I have three so far. One is by my bed and holds my laptop, which is on a tray, and handy for immediate use! I also have a set of four stacking shelves on rollers which contain all my necessary accoutrements--phone, books, pens, notepads, remote, scanners, surge suppressor for phone and electronic accesories.

Oh, you also have to be careful of the top shelf, the one that you might use as a tabletop--no matter which model you buy, it will invariably crack from too much weight, so watch it!

If you decide to spend your money on used chests of drawers for storage, you can either put castors on them too or stick on those "gliders," silicone thingies that make it easier to slide things around, even on wood floors. I'm VERY fond of those.
