What do you want a wide-angle lens for? What do you plan to shoot? How much money are you willing to spend?

Without specifics like this it's hard to answer meaningfully.

Zoom? Prime? VERY wide? Not so wide? What lenses do you have already? What are you going to use it for? How much are you going to spend? Does it HAVE to be second hand? I'm in the UK too, but you really haven't given us anything to go on....

An idea of your budget would help, as well -- since there's a tremendous variation in pricing & performance!

Second hand makes it sound like you have budget limits. I'd recommend getting the Canon 22-55. This is a great lens that I use all the time. It's cheap (you could maybe even afford it new) but rarely shows it's limitations in quality. If you're going to be blowing stuff up then that could be more of an issue. I've taken things past 8x10 with no problems though.

If you want a prime go for the 24mm. If you want a higher quality wide zoom then get the Canon 24-85. It's about 3 times the cost of the 22-55 but is a higher quality lens.

Good luck

I have a sigma 18/35 and it is quite good, I also have a 28/105(2.8) which is another good lens, both these can be picked up reasonably second hand,
