U.S. says no mail for now on passenger flights

Reuters Posted September 13 2001, 11:30 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Mail is temporarily banned from U.S. passenger flights as part of increased security following Tuesday's attacks using hijacked airliners, U.S. officials said on Thursday.

``As of right now, in terms of belly cargo, mail is not being allowed,'' U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta told a news conference.

Mineta said cargo airlines would be allowed to resume normal schedules Thursday along with passenger flights as long as they could meet new security requirements.

U.S. airspace was shut down on Tuesday after hijackers seized four commercial airliners, two of which slammed into and destroyed New York's World Trade Center towers, a third hit the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in western Pennsylvania.

[yes, it is true that USPS used any flight going its way to send mail. Expect delays, and don't blame us for all of them. LOL]

I heard that there is still something like 250,000 pieces of mail being held at the airport in Broward. haven't heard about any in Miami. I'll let you know what it is like at work tonight. I expect heavier security, but then again the management doesn't care much for the workers...]
