Soap Making

Here is a place that sells soap supplies. I recently had a whole conversation with someone who thought that the DA should be able to approve all sales of lye because of Meth. This is of course ridiculous!

Hello Little Bit Farm, Lye is getting harder to find around here too but, my wife can make a lot of bars of soap with the occasional can that we find in some of the smaller grocery stores in the area. Sincerely, Ernest

The JayC stores in southern Indiana still sells lye.

How long can you safely store cans of lye? I hope to soon be able to find the time to start making my own soap, but of course now it is difficult to find the lye. Six months ago most of our local grocery stores had it, now I can't find any. When I do locate some, I would like to buy a number of cans to have on hand, but don't want that stuff leaking all over my shelves!

Actually I have a soap question. I bought a can of Red Devil lye at my local supermarket(there was plenty on the shelves), remembering that many years ago there was a recipe for soap on the can. Not wanting to pay for lard when vegetble shortening was less expensive, I purchased a 3 lb. can. When I got it home, there was no longer a recipe for soap on the lye can! My only reference for soap making indicates that this lye is different than what is needed for soap. Can any of you smart and knowlegeable homesteaders tell me how to make simple laundry/hand soap from an 18 oz. can of Red Devil lye and a 3 lb. can of vegetable shortening?

lye last a long time. I bye it from a company in Tenn. in 20 pound containers. She doesn't have to charge me a hazard fee, of course she also must use Fed Ex. Some companies charge a 20 dollar hazard fee. Soapmaking is not a cheap hobby. I sell my soap for little profit hopefully someday getting enough wholesales that it will work out okay. Yes it is hard to fine lye anymore. Also, in this State I couldn't get some animal supplies I use on my sheep and horses because this is a big Meth area so I ordered and received them from Kansas. I really can't explain to myself what is legal and not anymore when it comes to simple every day stuff we use to buy. For one I use ephrinphene in case I am having a terrible reaction to shots (I mean the baby lambs having the reation). In fact had I not had any on hand this year I would have lost a set of twins 3 days old. Now I use another product for my horses hooves which the Feed stores no longer carry because of it being used in the Meth Labs. So I keep the hooves well painted now with moisterizers. Debbie

I was unpacking some stored boxes yesterday, and found a partially used sheet of decals, still had the mini decals on there, the larger ones I used on some project long ago, and when I flipped it over and was reading the instructions, it said you could put them on soap as decoration. Thought that was a neat idea for soap makers.
