I planted sweet potato squash this year and got something that does not look like a sweet potato squash. it is solid white and is shaped something like a pumpkin. Has anyone here grown sweet potato squash? does anyone else have a mystery vegetable/

Little bit,

Last year I planted pumpkins and also got something like you have described above - shaped like a pumpkin and was all white. I thought it might be some type of a gourd but was not sure. I just used them as porch decorations for Fall.

Well we ate mine and didn't die. Tasted quite good too.

Squash crossbreeds like crazy. If you save seed, you have to hand pollinate it and protect it from contamination by pollen from other squash or pumpkins. Crossbred squash is quite edible, the results are variable as in any crossbreeding scenario. :) Some will be great, others dry and tasteless. If you plant their seeds, nearly every plant's fruit will be different, never the same thing twice.
