Big Brother Loves You

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

During the many months that I have been on this forum, I have seen many virtual fisticuffs over the rights to privacy, intrusion of the government into our lives, the invasiveness of building permits, national identity cards, etc. All in all, I get then feeling that Big Brother is the worst nightmare of the folks on this form.

Please try to think back to the original Big Brother of the novel. Do you remember the other MAIN trait of those under the thrall of this creation? It was their follow the leader, knee jerk, rabid hatred of whoever was declared the enemy today. That enemy could change overnight, or even (as it happened in the book) during the course of a rally against the enemy. When that happened, the people turned their patriotically mindless venom IMMEDIATELY toward the new enemy, as a group, in one coordinated motion. All thought of the previous enemy (now our beloved friend and ally - ring any bells?) was swept away in the rush to show solidarity against the new enemy, completely on the say so of those in charge. No thinking allowed.

Remember, folks, big brother is watching. And he loves you when you behave.

Does anybody remember Thomas Macaulay? In 1857 he stated:

"The day will come when in the United States a multiude of people will chose the legislature. Is it possible to doubt what sort of a legislature will be chosen? On the one side is a staesman preaching patience, respect for rights, strict observance of public faith. On the other is a demagogue ranting about the tyranny of capitalism and usurers and asking why anybody should be permitted to drink champagne and to ride in a carriage while thousands of honest people are in want of necessaries. Which of the candidates is likely to be preferred by a workman?...When Society has entered on this downward progress, either civilization or liberty must perish. Either some Caesar or Napoleon will seize the reins of government with a storng hand,or your Republic will be as fearfully plundered and laid waste by barbarians in the 20th century as the Roman Empire in the 5th; only with this difference, that the Huns and vandals who ravaged the Romans came from without, and that your Huns and vandals will have been produced within your country,by your own institutions."

Our country is going from Republic to Democracy to Majority Rule to Chaos to Totalitarian Rule.

Soni--that was a thought-provoking comment. Thank you. I will take liberties with it and share it with some insanely angry men I know. It may help them think about the latest issues in the news here.

Big Brother does not like me, civil disobedience is my way of life.

Soni, have you read Claire Wolfe's books? They are a real inspiration to us all as homesteaders!!!

Did you catch the fact that evidence pointing to Osada bin Laden was acquired as a result of "intercepted communications"? Big Brother is listening to you. Not only that, but it will be that much more difficult to argue against encroachments on your freedom in the future.

And don't forget to add that what you may have said or wrote or posted in the past may come back to haunt you. Man, am I going to have to do a google search on myself? Am I getting too paranoid?

Our small town airport (100,000) is pulling parked cars in its parking lots a minimum of 300 feet away from nearest buildings, as well as demanding a minimum of two hours check in prior to boarding planes. I guess from the past events of previous two days, very good idea, but what will be proposed later? Papers, please?

an old friend whose brother used to have HIGH governmental security clearance and deal with all sorts of top secret hush-hush missions once told her, "Don't ever believe anything our government tells you."

One of the things I like about this forum (the only one I am on and check religiously) is the free-spiritedness of the folks here. Independent thinkers, hooked into what REAL living is in the face of the falseness of our society's values. Thanks to all for giving me faith that there are sane folks throughout the US.

marcee, to you little saying "Don't ever believe anything our government tells you." I would add "Believe less than that of what the media tells you." All media, local, national, print or TV.
