GAS GAUGING IN ALABAMA AND OTHER PLACES Because of today's events....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Gas prices in Alabama have gone up to more than $2 per gallon this afternoon (they were $1.39 before all the terrorism started this morning)

Our emergency management director went out at 3:15 p.m. today to seehow our local stations were doing and some of them were changing their signs as he watched! They were issuing a statement late this afternoon that unreasonable price gaugers would be prosecuted!

The large mall that my daughter works out in Michigan was shut down at 1 p.m. and all the big malls in Birmingham shut down at 5 p.m. Our county commission chairman's wife, daughter, her husband, and one and a half year old grandbaby were staying int he hotel right across from the two World trade centers. They finally heard from them about two hours ago and they are headed back to Alabama in a renter car.

A wonderful black man who is one of the most humble Christian men I know, his son worked on the 35th floor of one of the tower buildings and as of mid-afternoon he had not heard anything, good or bad, about him.....I have attended his church several times covering different political meetings they have there.

My chickens keep cackling, the rabbits keep nibbling, and the cats keep lazily sleeping....nature goes in in spite of the mess we're making of the world.

Rumor from husband's co-worker is that gasoline prices are up to $5.00 a gallon in Oklahoma City. It's 1.59 here in Colorado; don't know what it was last week, but I don't think it's up much...Malls here were closed all day. I'm glad to hear that stock market will be closed another day.

Just filled up and it was still 1.49 a gallon .I'm in NY State, and its 7:50 pm

Suzy it saddens me that people would take advantage of a situation such as this but as my mom always said "people will be people". Thankfully all people are not that way. I'm just glad that we're well stocked at our house. In the case of a long term situation our meals wouldn't be fancy but they'd be healthy and filling.

I know what you're saying about nature going on. My little dog has gone about her day as usual while I've stayed glued to the tv screen.

Gas went up about a nickel here in Alachua county, Florida at my usual place but it's been going up and down like that for weeks so I don't think it had anything to do with profiteering. Virtually anything governmental shut down around here and many of the larger businesses.

Hearing from my son in Houston, TX he says they informed them to fill up this morning as the gas was going to shut down there. Heard they sent the kids home from school. Son is living/working/goes to school around the ship channel area in Houston. Security really beefed up around there he says. I'm still in a daze over this horrible act. Watching the hummingbirds fighting at their feeder. I wish they'd be more sharing!!! This so touched the world, my heart aches. My prayers to the families. Debb

I also heard from a cyber friend that gas in Indianapolis was up to about $5.00, but here, it's the same as it was for the last little while since our "jump" because of that refinery fire. Still around $1.80 (give or take a few cents).

I live in Houston Tx. The entire city has been in a frantic state. Pretty much all of Downtown Houston has been evacuated and traffic has been jammed for miles. They even turned the HOV lanes around to where they exit the city rather than enter. It was said that they were going to quit all sales of gas today around noon, but I still see cars lined up at gas stations everywhere I go. I haven't realy paid attention to gas prices even though I'm about to be on "E" myself. I guess I'll find out then.

We must stay calm, our fuel supply has not been effected. We have not threatened any oil producing countries, infact all of those nations have denounced the attacks. If you gas stations have raised the pump prices as you have been reporting , they are gouging. Do not play into thier game by hording or panic buying. First the terrorists will get thiers and then the station owners will get thiers if you know what I mean. I can think of no more unpatriotic action than to profiteer from our national tragedy.

I think it is just shamefull for any gas station to raise prices because of what happened today. Absolutely shamefull, as Americans. All I can think of is all the Red Cross convoys, Disaster Relief Teams, Semis full of water and food and blankets, volunteers, hundreds of thousands of folks going to NY to help, and this is the thanks they get! Raise the gas prices!

This is so embassasing as a country. Good Grief. We should be banding together to send all the money we can to help them, shouldn't we? Now we can't even afford to drive to work. What happened to sticking together as a country? The people are doing this, not the terrorists now. Run the stores and banks and break the rest of the country. People should stop thinking about themselves and think about all those families just ripped apart, and all the volunteers who have to SEARCH for weeks on end now. That will affect them for life.

All day I watched CNN and not once did I hear for people to stay calm and not panic. I hope the gas stations doing this pay big time.

There has been gas gouging prices in Kansas City. Reports on the news showed some stations charging $4.99 and people lining up to buy it! I live about 40 miles south and the prices have stayed the same so far, but there were sure some long lines at the stations today. The news reported that there would be heavy fines for stations raising prices, and the attorney general asked for people to bring in their gas receipts if they had been overcharged, so appropriate action could be taken. It's disgusting that station owners are doing this. It just makes me sick.

Northern Wisconsin....mid-grade is selling for $1.94 tonight just as it has been since the week before Labor Day. Filled up at our local little gas station, saw everyone in town there doing the same and swapped stories. Guy I know has family back in Chicago and he told me it was $8 a gallon there tonight. Have heard $5 a gallon elsewhere in the state, but don't have it visually confirmed.

The station attendant told me that they are supposed to be getting a tanker in tomorrow and said IF they get it, uncertain now, but said they had no idea what would happen to the prices. Next little town over had cars backed up like the old Oil Embargo days. (when I seem to recall that we were all totally aghast that gas had risen to $1.29 a gallon.)

Raising gas prices like that is ILLEGAL! It is important to make sure that the authorities know that stations are doing that. I am here in NYC and have watched all of this terror unfold from my office and apt in Midtown. I can look out of my office and still see the plumes of smoke off in the distance. NYC is nervous, but nowhere near the level of hysterics being found in other parts of the US. Remember that when you freak out, you let these terrorists win. That is just what they want you to do - turn against each other in fear. I went to the supermarket yesterday and we have food on the shelves and the prices are the same...(maybe only about 50% as much bread and milk as normal, but that happens in snow storms too.) NYC is in a state of shock today, and to look at the skyline and not see the towers...horror. Remember to keep the fear reasonable, and if you are afraid to leave you house that is understood, but at the same time realize you are letting these bastards win.
