And if we bomb them into a glassy waste and Americans dance in the streets, will we be any different from them?

Sure we would. Don't you know that in this case he who dances last, dances best?

I find it difficult to imagine Americans dancing in the streets over any mass killings of anyone. Although a great many of us hope the people behind these brutal acts of violence get what's coming to them.

I'm seeing what I can only describe as "vengeance porn," where people are really getting into what they would like to do in return. It is stomach-turning.

Firemouse,

I have never understood why it is so important to be perceived as "better than them." I don't CARE whether I'm "better than them." The fact is, we have TRIED to be "better than them" for the better part of a century now, and it hasn't done us a lick of good, at least not as far as terrorists are concerned.

The same countries that have received our foreign aid money and who have benefitted from our relief efforts after a natural disaster turn back around and call us things like The Great Satan. While they won't openly engage in acts of war against us, they offer shelter and comfort to those who DO.

I say they're just as guilty. No, they're MORE guilty.

I try to live a good and moral life. I try to help those who are less fortunate than me. I am gentle to those who are unkind to me, because it's the Christian thing to do.

But guess what? If you come into my house uninvited and threaten my family, I'm not going to waste time thinking about whether you consider me a "good Christian" as I plant a couple of slugs in your forehead. We'll straighten that out later. Nor will I be concerned about whether I've become as one with the criminal.

Couldn't care less.

If you threaten me, I will protect my family.

Let's take the extreme case. Suppose we were to do as the Russians did back in the 70's, when an Islamic extremist group captured a bunch of their people and help 'em hostage in Lebanon. The USSR hesitated about three minutes; then they went and took hostage several families of the terrorists and announced quite calmly that THEY would begin killing THEM if their people weren't released immediately.

You know what? They got their people back. And you know what else? Terrorists rarely bother them. Amazing, isn't it?

I'm not saying we should go that far, but if we make it clear to the Afghans, Iraqis and Sudanese that we will hold THEM responsible if these terrorists use their countries as a base for attacking us, I think they'll be a WEE bit more reluctant about give these terrorists safe haven.
