Friend's nephew and girlfriend also did not go to work today--in building one block from WTC. Last-minute decision--went to Brooklyn to look at property instead. Managed to get on a ferry out of the city, which took everyone free of charge over to New Jersey.

I left Boston about 11:30. The transportation routes were free (mostly because it takes time to process all that money and they wanted to wave folks through).

I renewed my (pre-rollover) request to our Executive Committee that there be a firm-wide contingency plan about how to get folks home safely.

My brother-in-law, who normally works in the Financial district, was in NJ when this happened. He has hundred of people who work for him in the World Trade Towers. My husband was just getting on a plane at 9 in Albany this morning. We're still waiting to hear from a neighbor who is a trucker, who was going to be down around NY today, but the dispatcher in NJ can't even be reached.

The New York reservoirs are all cordoned off up here.

In times like this, a prime thing to remember: each of us can be a nucleus for clear thinking, for steadiness. We can be there for our communities, for our families.

Yes, there will be fury against the perpetrators, but let us not in our grief become as those we condemn.

There is going to be so much pain. We must be there for each other.

Don't forget to breathe. In times like this our breath gets caught, gets shallow. Take a series of slow, deep breaths, even if there is chaos around you. You will be able to work more effectively this way, and respond more objectively.
