We've got Laurent Robert on the wing....

Can anyone confirm to me whether this song is in fact derived from a Terry Hibbett song? I thought it was of much later provenance but my dad assures me it was started for Hibbett. Anyone know?

Definitely a Hibbit song. I remember when he died I was humming it to myself all day and thinking it quite appropriate.

Yes absolutely a 1970s favourite, and if I recall the whole crowd sang it the game after he died

Thanks you lot. Just goes to show me dad does know something ;) Honestly, I can't stop thinking about how good Robert was on Saturday: it is so long since we had someone like him, someone who can just change things with a bit of flair but who is predatory enough to pick up on a dodgy backpass. Woo hooooo.

Yes Dougs - if I remember correctly, it was the song at the '74 FAC Semi at Hillsborough. Brings back memories of a truly memorable day - and a really excellent player.

The Terry Hibbett song was also part of Harry Palmers "Geordie Medley" that he sang before a match a long long time ago.

With ref to Robert, prior to coming to Newcastle I had only seen the guy play twice, both games in a more withdrawn role than he seems to have with Toon. My opinion then was he was a excellent player but due to the surplus of world class players in front and alongside of him, his natural play was inhibited. Not sure if Kev is talking about Shearer or Robert in saying `one swallow does not make a summer` but to a certain extent he is correct. It is also probably worth noting Clarky`s comments on the first 30 at Boro where the midfield was over- run, teams can be punished in that kind of spell from which there is no way back. North East fans (Sunlun inc) tend to as I have mentioned before look for instant heros and saddle them with the weight of their expectations , give the lad a wee bit more time over the course ,cream will rise to the top,he will not play against a defender as poor as Vickers every week, at times he will be asked to defend when the TEAM is under the cosh, IMHO that the two who will gain the most from this talented footballer will be Shearer for obvious reasons and for less obvious Dyer on his return . Just the spur for him to go for it and be the `main man`. The most interesting quote was Shearers when he said "Laurent will take the pressure of Nobby , as we have had to rely on him to set up the goal chances in the past`, this is probably true but what sort of light does it put the likes of Speed, Lee etc in?

I do not think too badly buff, Lee and Speed must realize that they did not create the number of chances Nobby did. I even suspect that this was not their role in the team.

I agree with you Buff, Ginola was magnificent when he had to play against Vickers in his first home game, but in the long run he was a magnificent player. I feel Robert is the same.

As Robson said after the Sunlun game, he hadn't seen Robert give the ball away as many times as he did that afternoon. He has close control and he has pace. I love the idea of pace and control on one wing and neat passing, control and centring on the other. Just as Buff would have loved Beckham to have proved his world class rating by being able to beat a man I feel Robert does. The all-fit, all pace supporting attack of Robert, Bellamy and Dyer is just a wonderful thought :0)

The thing is, Laurent has done this at his two previous clubs: he was idolised at both of them, so you have to assume that he is as good a player as he looks. He may not be able to sustain his Saturday performance for the whole season but we have a genuinely good player.

A lot of headscratching when we try and do a team sheet with Robert, Dyer, Solano and Bellamy. Probably a result of us not having had the luxury of options before, so we feel we need to squeeze every good player we have on to the pitch at the same time. But we don't have to. What we can do is tweak the team depending on form, injuries and tactics whilst still maintaining the balance we were all looking for last season. With players due to return from injury and a few potential nibbles for new defensive players, things haven't looked so positive for ages.
