DENVER (AP) Barry Bonds hit three home runs Sunday to give him 63 for the season, passing Roger Maris' once-magical mark and moving him closer to Mark McGwire's single-season record.
Bonds has 18 games left in the season to hit 70 homers, the record the McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals set in 1998.
Bonds' third homer was a three-run shot in the 11th inning that lifted the San Francisco Giants over the Colorado Rockies 9-4. His first-inning homer, which soared 488 feet from home plate, tied Maris' record of 61 for most homers in a season by a left-handed hitter.
Maris, a New York Yankees outfielder, set the single-season record in 1961. It has been surpassed only by McGwire and the Chicago Cubs'Sammy Sosa both right-handed hitters.
