Nobby Makes His Peace - allegedly!

The GuardianUnlimited are reporting that Nonny Solano has made his peace with BR upon his return from Peru. They say:

Nolberto Solano has defused a row with Bobby Robson, by turning his back on international football. Robson believed the Newcastle midfielder broke a promise not to play for Peru, when he featured in a World Cup game this week. But Peru's defeat by Uruguay ended their slim hopes of qualification, and Solano has informed national coach Julio Cesar Uribe that he does not want to be considered for the three remaining qualifiers.

That will come as good news to Robson, who now must decide whether to include him in his side at Middlesbrough tomorrow. "I've spoken to Nobby and the position is that he has now told the Coach - but he told the Coach the same last year - that he would now like not to be selected for the next three games to commit himself finally and completely to Newcastle this season, and that pleases me.

Their next commitment is the Copa America in 2003. The short-term is that he's given up his international desires because of their elimination from the World Cup, and we've shaken hands on that today, and I would expect him to fulfil that promise.

He's been given a very lucrative contract here and it was because of that he wanted to not play anymore. That's why I was angry, not because he wanted to play for his country but because he went back on a promise."
