BBC Three dead in LA shooting Police are scouring the area for the killer

Three people have been killed and another two wounded in a shooting incident in a suburb of Los Angeles, California.

Two of the wounded are reported to be in a critical condition.

There have been no arrests.

Police lieutenant Rex Jones said said police were looking for a man in his mid-20s who was believed to have fled in a vehicle.

"Somebody showed up, entered the home with a weapon and started shooting," he said.

Local television reports showed police cordoning off an area and conducting a house to house search of the neighbourhood.

The six were shot in a home in a quiet neighbourhood of Simi Valley, some 56 kilometres (35 miles) north-west of central Los Angeles.

The suburb, home to many police officers, has often been ranked the safest urban area of its size in America.

If he fled in a vehicle why are they searching houses?

Seems to me they should be checking garages and parking lots...

The date on this is the 5th and says the car the guy was in might have been a rental. Simi Valley would be easy for the cops to shut off or keep an eye out on who leaves the town. There are only about 3 or 4 ways out of that valley. ************************************

Simi Valley shooting leaves three dead, three injured

Three people were killed and three others wounded in a shooting this afternoon inside an upscale eastern Simi Valley home, police said. The gunman fled and is still at large. Simi Valley Police Lt. Rex Jones said all six victims are believed to be related.

"Sombody showed up, entered the home with a weapon and started shooting," Jones said.

The weapon was a handgun.

Police were looking for a man in his mid-20s, with a dark mustache, dark hair and wearing a light-blue short-sleeved shirt. He was believed to be driving a dark blue Ford Explorer that police said might have been a rental car.

The three wounded suspects were transported to area hospitals.

Two teen-agers were being treated late this afternoon at Simi Valley Hospital. A 19-year-old woman was in critical condition in an operating room, said Jeremy Brewer, hospital spokesman. A 16-year-old boy was in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the right thigh, Brewer said.

A neighbor said his children called him on a cell phone to say they heard five shots. He said he told them to get in the house and lock the doors. They were hiding in a pantry in the house, staying there until their father got home. The father was waiting behind police lines to be let back into the neighborhood.

Jones said the shootings occurred at 3:44 p.m. on Yurok Court, a small cul-de-sac in Simi Valley. "Our officers responded and they found numerous subjects down" in the house, Jones said.

The neighborhood of five-bedroom, three-bath homes is about two years old, neighbors say. Home prices run from $540,000 to $570,000.

I called a friend yesterday, her husband had been in Simi and I ask if she had heard about the shootings. She said her husband was home now (another state) and this was the first she heard of it. I hope they catch this guy soon.

Police Shed Light on Simi Shootings By PAUL CHAVEZ Associated Press Writer

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- A man sought in the slayings of three relatives of an ex-girlfriend was agitated because he wrongly believed the woman had given him a disease, authorities said.

Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, 35, allegedly entered his ex-girlfriend's home through a garage door Wednesday and shot five family members, killing three. The woman, Maria Rios, 24, was not at home at the time.

Rodriguez, a civil engineer for the state Transportation Department, continued to evade police Friday. Police found his Toyota Solara in a church parking lot in nearby Thousand Oaks, but that was not the vehicle he was seen in after the shootings.

KCOP-TV in Los Angeles reported Thursday that Rodriguez and Rios ended their long-term relationship about six months ago and he had become increasingly upset.

"Mr. Rodriguez accused (her) of giving him a transmitted blood disease. That was later proved to be not true," detective Bill Daniels told the station.

Rodriguez's family told police his mental stability was deteriorating and in June they persuaded him to see a therapist who concluded he needed medication, Daniels said.

Police have served search warrants on his home and at his parents' home, also in Thousand Oaks, but did not disclose what, if anything, they found. Rodriguez's house was set on fire Wednesday about 20 minutes before the shootings at the other home.

The dead were identified as Rios' grandmother, Espiranza Martinez, 80; her younger brother, Ricardo Calderon, 12; and her daughter, Shantal Rios, 4.

Rios' sister, Lucia Vargas, 19, was shot in the abdomen and hand and was in stable condition. Her brother Rigoberto Calderon, 16, was shot in the leg; and another brother, Rafael Calderon Jr., 18, broke a wrist jumping out a second-story bathroom window.

Their parents, Rafael Calderon Sr. and his wife, Ana, were at work at the time of the shootings.

"I just want to thank all my friends and relatives for their support," Calderon Sr. told reporters Thursday. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press
