Read his essay on composition at www.eapoe.org. First it must be short and able to be read at one sitting(one hour?). Then there must a single effect to be produced observing the unities of place and time. Right from the first words everything must tend to this planned effect toward a climax. Read his reviews of Irving and Hawthorne.
