Condit Victim of a Setup, Son Suggests

By HELEN KENNEDY Daily News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON ep. Gary Condit's son speculated yesterday that Chandra Levy's disappearance could be part of a shadowy plot to "set up" his father.

Appearing on CBS's "Early Show," Chad Condit linked the theory to his dad's seat on the House Intelligence Committee.

"Just a few weeks ago, a friend of mine says, 'You know, Chad, your dad was set up. This is a setup. There's too many pieces of this that points to a kind of a setup,'" Condit said when asked whether he had any idea what happened to Levy.

"And early on, drumbeats about him being removed from the Intelligence Committee were a little suspicious to me," he said. "So I don't know exactly what happened to her, but I think that might be one of the theories we need to look at."

The California congressman faces a frosty reception when the House reconvenes today.

Colleagues who aren't openly criticizing him are distancing themselves in the wake of his evasive answers about his relationship with the 24-year-old federal intern, who vanished May 1.

House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt has hinted he may bounce Condit from the Intelligence Committee — as a sanction or because he is perceived as vulnerable to blackmail.

Chad Condit, who has become the family spokesman since his dad's recent TV interviews bombed, said it would be ridiculous to take the committee seat away. "He is a good American and an American we could trust with whatever secrets or national security issues we might face," he said.

"He said calling his father a murder suspect is "unacceptable" and blamed the suspicions on the media.

"First they tried to convict Gary of sex. Now they're trying to convict him of murder," he said. "So within the public opinion polls, you pretty much destroyed this man."

"you pretty much destroyed this man." Chaddy, baby, "we" didn't force your pa to dabble in the really kinky world of threesomes and more or to diddle interns less than half his age, while telling his multiple mistresses his wife, your ma, is an invalid, or to obstruct justice--for that is what he did when he was "less than forthcoming," as they say, with the police. Nobody forced him to act worse than a Disney Animatronix robot when he kept answering Connie Chung's questions with the identical phrases over and over and over. Your pa chose Connie Chung to interview him, you know, nobody forced him into that.

And there you are, nice-looking young fella, defending the indefensible. I hear your sister Cadee is going on Larry King tonight too. You two young 'uns quit your well-paid state jobs in a hissy fit and you with a wife and two kiddies to support as well. Gov. Gray's mild rebuke of your father was nothing--why did you really quit? Because you thought people would think your pa must be innocent for you two nice kids to quit your jobs? That he would gain support, be re-elected, and you two would find cushy jobs again? I hate to tell ya, but it didn't work. Pa's gonna lose his job soon; what will you all do for income then? No matter what you or your sister says, Chaddy, your pa dug his own grave and even stretched out in it.

I suggest long-term family counseling for you all. Seriously.

Lovely comments from Lucianne:

Not Far From The Tree: Chad Condit went on CBS yesterday and claimed his father had been "set up" because he was on the Intelligence committee. This whole story is Clinton-Lite enough without this extra spin. Yo, Chad - my man - it didn't work for Hillary, why should it work for you and your creepy dad? Incidentally, Chad's sister, Cadee (pronounced kuh-DEE) is going to be on Larry King tonight. Maybe she will stick up for her mother. That would be refreshing.
