Distin's in >>>

My only question is what Griffin must be thinking if the arrival of Distin 'now gives' Bobby options at right back? From TeamTalkBollox...

-- Newcastle have landed Paris Saint Germain defender Sylvain Distin on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent £4million move. The club have been in talks with the French outfit for several weeks regarding the central defender and have finally sealed the deal they were after. Distin has been frozen out at PSG under coach Luis Fernandez and turned down a move to Bolton last month. The 24-year-old can also operate at right-back and will give Magpies manager Bobby Robson vital defensive options. Distin is set to go straight into the United squad for the trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday. --

Depends on who you listen to. I heard yesterday (Ronnie, .com??) that he was a CB who can also play in MF. Perhaps the "bite" we're looking for in that department??

interesting.

FINALLY! All this bollocks about midfield/forwards, when what we really need is some class at the back. Let's hope he's it.

BTW, who will he displace?

Is there any source for this other than the TeamTalkBollox? (It's not called that for nothing.)

I can only find the ever-authoritive-on-Toon-matters Fratton Faithful (unofficial Portsmouth site of all things) to back it up.

There's nothing official up yet, and Ceefax on page 390 is still cr@ping on about Nobby as it has been for the last three days.

Nick, you could have a World Class back line but if you have a shit midfield, you'll still concede goals. That's why central midfield was our priority. I wonder what Monsieur Houllier thinks about this - wasn't he after Distin?

He was only going for a full set Dougal. All he needed was Distin and Kermit and he has a full team of Frogs ;-)

Hear what you're saying Dougal, and I understand exactly what you mean, but we've been bad at the back for as long as I remember. Of course, everyone comes up with a knee-jerk reaction of 'great going forward but shit defence' when talking about the Keegan era, but last year it was the same. What was it, 21 or so games without a clean sheet? That tells me something about our defence as well as our midfield.

I suppose we don't want to be a 'boring Arsenal', but I'd settle for a few 1-0 scorelines next season.

I'm not talking about attacking - I'm talking about the old maxim about defence starting with attack. If your strikers can hold up the ball and your midfield isn't as weak as tea, you'll find you'll concede fewer goals.

Cheers, Ken. Nothing definite there, mind. Closest was soccerage with:

Media reports suggest that the Frenchman has agreed to join Bobby Robson’s side on loan for the remainder of the season, with a view to a permanent £4m transfer next summer.

You get a weird amalgam of old and new stories on those search engines. There are headlines that suggest a new rift between Nobby and Bobby, but are obviously throwbacks to last week.

Plenty of Notts County (the other Magpies) stories as per usual. Their plight seems to mirror our own, actually. They've just lost out on a defender called Breckin, seemingly due to fannying about over the price.
