Edgemoor & Manetta R.R.greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread
I AM INTERESTED IN FINDING INFORMATION ON (1) THE DISPOSITION OF AN 0-4-0T THAT RAN ON THE 3 MILE LONG EDGEMOOR & MANETTA R.R., S.C., AND (2) THE YEAR THE RAILROAD WAS ABANDONED. I BELIEVE THE ONLY INDUSTRY THE RAILROAD SERVED WAS A TEXTILE MILL. I THINK THE RAILROAD CONNECTED WITH THE SEABOARD AT LANDO AS LATE AS 1963. ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

The E&M's #5 is indeed on display at Richburg, SC. It is now under a shed with fencing around it.
The mill was torn down around 1997-98 and development in recent years has taken parts of the former right of way, but their are still sections of the line that are still intact. The bridge over Fishing Creek still exist in early 2002 (although I wouldn't walk on it!!!),and CSX in recent years has used a small section of the right of way at Edgemoor (right at the interchange) to store primarly MOW equipment. When the mill was still in operation after the line shut down, it was used to unload coal for the mill where it was then trucked over.
If you haven't heard already, there is mention of the E&M in the latest issue (Fall 2002) of Classic Trains. Also there were two other articles published in the past: one in the May, 1965 issue of Trains and the other in the March 1972 Railroad Model Craftsman.

The E&M 0-4-0 is located next to the Lancaster & Chester Rwy. in Richburg, SC at a playground. I saw it on a L&C Rwy. excursion at the NRHS Convention held in Charlotte in the late 1990s. Unfortunately, it was out in the open without a fence or roof. The locomotive is small and seems at first glance to be part of the playground equipment.

The "Manetta" portion of the name came from Manetta Mills, the name of the textile mill the line served.

The Edgemoor & Manetta ran from Edgemoor (near where 901 crosses the old Seaboard tracks) to the Lando mill about 2 and a half miles away. They used steam until the time the line was abandoned, which was, I think, in the early 70s. E&M 0-8-0 now rests in Richburg on the L&C after being "rescued" to a certain extent.
Also the line is dipicted on a USGS topo map which can be found at www.topozone.com by searching for "Edgemoor".
Later, when the weather cools off, I plan to take a ride up there to see what is still left of the line and to see #5. Joe H's post follows

The E&M ran until 1975, I believe - I can't recall the exact date from memory, but it was noted as one of the last revenue steam operations in the country. The last time I was in Lando, which was many years ago (probably ca. 1980), the 0-4-0 was on display at the mill, but I don't know its current status.
