Simpy(too simply) put, his dreams of life as a Southern gentleman of means was dashed and his life as a poet thrown completely into a do or die mode of existence. Denied constantly the securities of life Poe became a constant fighter from below, and perhaps set up a "me against the establishment" mode from then on. And poor. And rejected personally with a feeling of lost opportunity and blighted future that would dog him to the end.
