Canon elan 7e or Eos 3 or a2e?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I took the opportunity to port this discussion over from Photo.net -- I hope that's OK. The following question was asked there by Alex Flefleh, and I invited him here to get this fine communities input.

>Canon elan 7e or Eos 3 or a2e?

Ive been looking to buy a new camera but there are so many choices i finally was able to decide that i want a canon but another problem accured.Which camera?Im looking for a camera that has a body that has a solid body construction and also high fps rate. All these cameras seem to have these features but which one is better there all in my price range but i need the one with the most features and the most expandable one.Could anyone help me out with my camera problem? Not obviously -- the elan 7 (and a2e) are a lot quieter...

I've got a couple of EOS 5s (A2e to US market), and I think that they still represent excellent value for money. High speed wind (5fps), very quiet shutter and wind combination, quiet rewind (2 speed selectable), if you have large hands, then the A2 with VG 10 grip (almost compulsory, it's that nice) will suit you well. I must say, that the AF on the EOS 3 (and maybe the elan 7 (EOS 30 for UK)) is faster. EOS 3 would be the "best" choice, but for a lot less, I'd go for the A2.

You really need to handle each side by side to get a feel for how the small differences will affect you, for example, I have my EOS 5s set to single frame advance 90% of the time, so the higher speed wind does not usually come into play. I take a lot of boat photos, with the camera vertical, and the eye control of the 5 does not work in this plane (small annoyance) whereas the 3s does (don't know about 7).

Enjoy choosing, and don't regret your choice afterwards.

The EOS-3 has the fastest AF, especially with the new 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, will AF with f/8 lenses (important if you plan to use Canon TCs) and is the most rugged of the 3 bodies.

The Elan 7E has the most up to date ECF, has built in diopter control (unusual at it's level), a very nice updated command dial with AF point selection keys inside -- but suffers from reduced AF functionality in low light.

The A2e has most of the features of the Elan 7E, has a brighter viewfinder, but older generation ECF & AF -- the AF is slower but does work in 1 EV lower light than the 7E.

A2e & EOS-3 can take interchangeable focusing screens.

How much money do you want to spend? What features are important to you? As previous posts suggest, handle all three bodies & decide for yourself. :-)

PS This sort of discussion better belongs in the LUSENET\EOS FAQ Forum discussion group. Persistent threads, a community of EOS users, etc.
