Houlier drops a go@lie

I see in the papers today that Liverpool are not only going for Dudek Dalek, they are also after Chris Kirkland. Can't see Sander or Peggy being too happy about that. Something says he's not best pleased with what he's got alread.

Westerveld seems well pi$$ed off about it.

It's as if he is scared for his place - a more positive response IMHO would be to say I'm prepared to fight for my place etc etc..

Liverpool must have a canny big wage bill for keepers now though. Dudek and Westerveld must be on a canny bit and Kirkland is consting over £7 so must be on a bit as well.

Peggy will be out shortly, there is no way he'll stay as fourth choice.

Sorry, I meant Kirkland is costing £7m, not £7

Slight difference in price there :)

sorry I'm a bit slow but I've been out of circulation a lot of late - so what exactly is Hooligan`s problem with Westerveld ? I`d have him in a shot at a reasonable price. Anyone else?

Nah LT, Westerveld's another shot-stopper in the modern idium - who isn't too good on crosses and makes too many mistakes. He's not as good as either of our keepers imo.

I`ll bow to your better judgement given the patchy amount of PL I get to watch - and then mostly through a cathode ray tube. So out of interest, which PL keepers WOULD you rate as better?

Barthez and Sullivan

Sorensen?

Just girding me loins to have this posting censored!!

Also, I'll be v. interested to see how Kasey Keller fares with his PL return. Now there`s a keeper I`ve always fancied (in a purely platonic sense y'understand?) ever since his Millwall days

mind you, an excellent performance on the day didn`t help Keller prevent Lee Clark & Andy Cole taking all 3 points at the Old Den a few years back. Now there was a talented combination - mebbes we should discuss bringing those two back to SJP ;O))))))

I don't think there are many really great keepers around right now LT.

I agree with Macbeth that Barthez is an excellent, if eccentric, keeper and probably the best around. After that there are bunch who are good but not great. David Seaman has been a fabulous keeper, and imo is still a very good one. Behind Barthez, I'd put Seaman in the same class as Given, Harper, Neil Sullivan, and Tim Flowers. I've also liked the look of the Smoggies Aussie keeper, Mark Schwarzer, when I've seen him.

I'm not certain about Sorensen as I haven't really seen much of him. In the previous two derby games at SJP he looked very good, but seemed nervy and uncertain in the recent game.

There are loads of keepers that are excellent in many respects, but have problems.

One of these days, Barthez will be tackled whilst going on a run and will be made a right fool of.

Given is great at shot stopping and canny at getting crosses - his punching is much improved. However, his weakness is still kicking, although even that is better than it used to be.

At the end of the day, if your defence is $hite then you are going to struggle to keep clean sheets, regardless of how good your keeper is.

Keller may have committed international hari kari signing for Spurs. He was dropped as the US starting keeper in favor of Brad Friedel since Friedel is playing regularly for Blackburn. Keller hasn't played a competitive match since the US lost to Mexico in July. Even though I rate Keller right up there with the world's top keepers, I don't think he's any better than Sullivan so can't see him displacing Sullivan for the #1 shirt barring serious injury or loss of form on Sullivan's part.
