Dr Bill, I have a problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

All this excessive golf has given me tennis elbow. (any jokes about wankers cramp will be disregarded). Anyway, can Dr Bill or any medical experts out there tell me if there is a cure that dosen't involve giving up golf for a few weeks?

Kenny`s diagnosis is correct, there are straps/velcro fastners out there but this is short term and will not get rid.

I've had the problem for several years, Rik - it doesn't really go away. Physiotherapy and ultrasound treatment helped me minimise the problem - was a bit costly though - and then I found that the elasticated straps that Buff desribes extremely helpful in containing the problem thereafter.

These are available in several designs, but in truth, other than the very basic design, are not that widely available over here. I used to buy them in the US when I was travelling over there a lot. The best one I found was made of a rubbery material that covers the whole elbow joint and keeps the area very warm during play.

I think that's neoprene. I've got one for my knee.

You may be able to buy them online. 'Ace' is one of the popular brands, I think. You could check www.cvs.com. That's the US version of Boots. The stores carry all those things, so they may have them online. Not sure if they ship outside the US, though.

Yep, all very sound advice in my view. Any variant of repetitive strain injury, which this is, you really have to stop doing the repetitive action (golf or whatever, as you say Rik) to give it a chance to recover.

Supports might help the symptoms, as will cortisone. If so, well and good, but the sad fact is that if you keep up the repetitive strain, the joint is likely keep on reacting the same.

It's a variant of the little-known saying that should be better known IMHO: 'if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always had'. Sometimes wish NUFC would take more note of that one myself.
