Info on virus

Can someone advise? I know nothing of PCs in all honesty. I received the dodgy e mail and while I opened the e mail I didn't open the attachment. Is this OK. I have since deleted the whole thing.

BTW - is there anyway we can NOT have our addresses on here or has that already been discussed?

Sorry Lynda, but I`M the resident cyberplank!(;o)

My very limited understanding is that if you haven`t opened the attachment you should be OK. But hang on there, I`m sure someone will post a much more knowlegeable reply! Gav is brilliant at keeping me on the straight and narrow.(:o)

I hope you're right! I only use this damn machine for work related stuff and logging onto nufc stuff but certain other people in my household will not be thrilled if I have caught a virus!

Galaxy is right Lynda. If you haven't opened the attachment you should be ok. You can always run your virus checker (assuming you have one - if not I'd get one asap) if you're not convinced.

Just make sure you also delete it from the "deleted files" folder as well, so you don't inadvertently open it months down the road when it's forgotten about.

Er..........not sure if I have a virus checker or not. Any suggestions?

Also, set up an email account that is only related to this bbs, rather than one you use all the time. That way if a virus or other malicious email is sent it won't ruin your normal account. Web based accounts (hotmail, yahoo, etc) are good because they won't automatically download attachments. Another advantage is your regular email address isn't open to the world. ;-)

Everyone's right Lynda, you can't get infected with this virus unless you've actually opened the attachment. Ciara's suggestion is a good one, get yourself a hotmail account and it's unlikely you'll have problems with these things.

...and never open an attachment sent by someone you don't know.

Or even by people you DO KNOW if the text with it doesn't sound like it's from them or if you don't normally receive attachments from them...

Feck it, never open anything, ever.
