HRT 'can help to fight Alzheimer's' By Celia Hall, Medical Editor (Filed: 28/08/2001)

HORMONE replacement with a drug known to have an effect on the brain, improved the memory of women with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, according to a study published today.

Women using an oestrogen patch improved their score in an attention test by 20 per cent and in memory tests by 30 to 35 per cent compared with those given a placebo.

The study by Dr Sanjay Asthana, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Madison, adds to the debate about the usefulness of hormone replacement therapy for women with Alzheimer's disease.

Dr Sanjay says in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology that the success in his study may be accounted for by the fact that he used estradiol, a formulation of the female hormone oestrogen, which is known to have an effect on the brain.
