Should we buy Cole?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Seems the NUFC board would like to blow £10m on him but BR wants to strengthen in other areas. He would have made a BIG difference yesterday and with Cort out for months, I am now warming to the idea. Shame BR isn't.

Aye, if Cole was upfront yesterday your finishing would have been even WORSE than it already was.

Cort & Bellamy, with Ameobi coming through isnt THAT bad, LooLoo seems poor, Shearer is practically finished but in maybe 2 years time, the little ugly welsh twat & Donkey Cort could be a canny partnership upfront.

i think we might well beat Sunderland actually. Especially if you play like that.

Be grateful for your point because you know we were the better team.

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

That will make up for us being the better team in the last 4 derby games then.

FTM 2-1

LooLoo seems poor? I think not...

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

I think we gave you a decent game at SOl in April but yeah you were the better team at the last 2 home (for us) derbies.

Cling onto your '2-1' thing if you wish but it's seeming further and further away now.................

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

Actually, I don't agree with you Lynda. I still believe they were fortunate to win either of the previous two games at SJP, and we were robbed yesterday AND in the 2-2 at the Flatpac two seasons ago. The only game in the last five they could have won deservedly was last seasons at the Flatpac.

They've had way more than the rub of the green in recent fixtures, and believe me they will run out of good fortune soon when the normal status quo will be re-established.

Aye, Barbarian, it's good of you to remind us that it's twenty one years since you beat us on Whereside.

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

I was being generous Clarky! If only the SMB could see through their bitterness, then sometimes they could do the same.

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

What with Barbie and RTG posters still using the "2-1" jibe, does that mean it's okay to pluck some scoreline from history to taunt the opposition?

I think I'll go for 6-1, we always win 6-1.

(Well we did in 1920-21 and 1955-56.)

If you aren't even prepared to have a decent discussion why the hell don't you go and post on another board. The truth hurts, hence your postings degenerating into abuse.

You cling onto your couple of victories, that fact that some people think you have a nice stadium and the fact you finished a few points above us in the league. Big deal.

I don't think the rest of what you said is worth commenting on.

'typical' Magpie. Well if that means, trying to have a civilised discussion with fellow fans without using abuse then hey that's me.

This is a NUFC board isn't it?

This 2-1 thing is getting hilarious now.

SMB was being used as a generic term and not directed at you specifically. I think the tone of the postings is the abusive bit actually but never mind.

No I don't think I've ruined my own thread I think you have!

The tone of your postings have hardly been full of healthy debate have they? Fair dues I called you a SMB but like your FTM it seems to come pretty naturally. Sorry if it upset you though (!)

I can't be arsed arguing about this anymore to be honest.

Derwentside College are clearly back early this year. Colon the Barbarian, not to be confused with Krist of course.

As Dancing Dave would have putit: no point in getting into a battle of wits with him as it's unsporting to fire on an unarmed opponent - like getting into an arse-kicking competition with a one-legged man.

Somebody hammers on your door and if there's no answer, they leave, unless it's a burgler.

So for fuxake why, when ar5eholes like this Barbarian moron bray on the door does somebody always chicken out and answer it ?

Use the effing peephole and see who's there, then ignore the cretin if he's the equivalent of a cheap-tarmac-drive salesman.

If nobody posts he'll get the message and eff off unless he's really as sad as he comes across.

For those of you who are trying to reason with this clown, I know it's hard lines when a reasonable looking thread gets hijacked, but I reckon it's better to cut your losses and just let it go, and maybe raise the point on a new thread.

Once it deteriorates to reform school level, we're wasting our time. For crissake Barbarian, grow up. The only way we can know you is through the postings you put on here, and as far as I'm concerned you give the impression of needing some kind of conselling. There are now one or two Sunderland fans who, after a few hiccups, have been made welcome on here. You never will be, with the approach you're using.

I'd even go so far as to say that it wouldn't surprise me if you make them cringe as well.

But don't waste your time putting me in my place cos I'll never look at this thread again.

Away from the Free ticket mackem tormrnts, the subject of Cole. It's a problem spending £10m on a player we sold at his prime for £7m, and the fact at 29/30 the resale value will be a bit low. Apart from that a good idea, the past few games I've seen have convinced me that Shola has a lot to learn (even to the point of doubting whether he'll make the grade), to give him a fair crack he's got to be in the reserves & get 10mins in the first team just to keep his tail up.

Accepting that a centre forward is critical, Rebrov could be a cut price bargain from Spuds, he's not happy there and is class.

Jesus, even pretending to be a hard man now :-D Glad you came, Colon, sorry your father did. Run along now.

Those are wise words from PB actually, given that he has indeed posted the thread onto RTG along with our e-mail addresses (though to the credit of reasonable Mackems, no-ones been arsed to respond to it).

More on-topic point is that if Robert wants Andy Andrew Cole then he's trying to have his gateau and eat it. We can't afford both him and his mate from PSG.

-- Anonymous, August 27, 2001

Bad grammar ahoy. I mean of course that Barbie - not PB himself - has posted the thread onto RTG.

Yet another thread completely destroyed by bitter mackems/geordie banter. The origional question of whether or not we should buy Cole is ignored completely. If this continues, I'm not going to bother using this BBS. It's getting dull as fuck.

Mac - is that to the tune of 'nah nah nah nah, hey hey, goodbye'? :@)

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

Interesting stats re Cole (subject to checking).

Cole has made 211 starts in the Prem and scored 134 goals - that is an average of 0.635 goals per game.

Phillips has made 73 starts in the Prem and scored 46 goals - that is an average of 0.630 goals per game.

If you bear in mind that Cole doesn't take pens then his record is pretty damned good IMHO, bearing in mind that there are certain people currently contributing to this bbs who think that Phillips is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

... don't know about you, but I absolutely hate sliced bread! ;o{)

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

I think Jacko should be banned for making a posting that has something to do with the title.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

...and how many chances did Cole have to score those goals / how many sitters has he missed - Cole makes Nobby (on Sunday's performance!) look like a Jimmy Greaves or Denis Law!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

I don't disagree with you entirely Bud but my recollection of him in his very prolific season at the Toon is that he took a high proportion of his chances. I even remember saying to my better half on one occasion "The thing that makes Cole a great striker is he nearly always hits the target".

What went wrong Andy? See what happens when you sell your soul to the devil!

PS I still think he's a miserable git and always has been.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

AC's strike rate at the Toon was incredible Jacko. At that stage he was an entirely natural and raw striker who's confidence was built sky high by KK, and was wonderfully supported on the field by Pedro.

He is now a very different - allegedly 'better' - player, honed into the finished article by the Manure machine. His strike rate has diminished significantly since those early days, even though he still gets his fair share.

I actually suspect that his strike rate would also have diminished if he stayed with the Toon, and indeed I believe this was already occurring when KK sold him.

My intial reaction to him coming back was positive, but clouded by my memories of the striker that he was, rather than the player he now is.

Having thought about it at leisure, I have concluded he would not be a good acquisition for us. He is a major ego, is near 30 yrs old, would demand a massive salary, and while still a good player, is not the striker we remember so fondly.

BR's priorities are for a central midfielder and a centre half - sentiments that virtually everyone on here and the majority of Toon fans would support - over the views of the faceless ones at SJP who have initiated this story, whether for genuine or purely PR reasons.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

I agree about his strike rate dropping off Clarky. I think during his first Prem season Keegan had the team virtually revolving around Cole - the one tactic we had was to get the ball to him in the box, preferrably on the deck. Once teams got wise to this and started to find ways of cutting off his supply his strike rate fell. I think this is what Keegan was on about when he sold him saying something about taking a new direction. Perhaps it would have been better if Keegan had coached him to be part of that new direction instead of just shifting him out and replacing him (eventually).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should rush out and sign him. I've just got this feeling that I'd have loved to see him up front with Shearer but without having had that unfortunate intervening period in a red shirt!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

The interesting thing for me would be the spin they'd put on how he was obviously mis-quoted and/or quoted out of context when he shot his mouth off after Keegan sold him.

Still, if Ferdy Shitshirt can weedle his way back into our good books, it shouldn't be too difficult to convince thickies like us that Andrew in fact never left, he's just been another on the long term injury list, and the bloke at manure is just a lookalike.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

PB,
Who on earth is "Ferdy Shitshirt"? If by any chance you're referring to our esteemed Chairman then I can assure you he hasn't weedled (!) his way back into my good books!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2001

"Should we buy Cole?"

No

Too old for £10m

We don't make anywhere near as many chances as Man Utd which means less goals.

Dwight Yorke is "available" for £7m

Obviously if he came he'd get my full support and probably be transformed into a Geordie hero once again, with Andy Cole, Andy Cole, Andy Andy Cole, he gets the ball.... ringing around the stadium once more.

I suspect it's a trick pulled by Manure trying to get rid of dying wood (not dead wood yet)

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2001

Reply to Jacko: I think KK did try to coach him to 'lead the line'. I know he took him to watch a game where Sir Les was playing (I think it was Anfield) to show him how it was done. But I still don't think that is Cole's way of playing.

-- Anonymous, August 30, 2001

Sounder,

Don't you find the continuing reference to forwards "leading the line" an interesting anachronism - given there is no 'line' to lead these days?

It is, of course, a old reference to a centre forward who effectively lead a forward line of five forwards - two wingers, two inside forwards (one slightly 'withdrawn' in todays parlance) and the CF himself. Yes, that really is 5 forwards!

-- Anonymous, August 30, 2001

hence the reason why kev wanted him to lead the line!

-- Anonymous, August 30, 2001

Who on earth is "Ferdy Shitshirt"?

Nee names, nee pack drill Clarky. I meant back into the good books of those who don't know better.:-))

-- Anonymous, August 30, 2001

Eeeee Clarky - I remember 5 forwards. Plus you had those wing halves that used to charge around upfield and only three defenders did you - the number 2, the number 3 and the number 5 - that latter always being enormously big and hairy. Aye bonny lad - those were the days!
